Subject description: broken USB-connector ? measuring where / what / how ?

Dear friends,

Now it struck me too!
No USB-connection!
Nord G2 Keyboard 1.62 on a Windows XP SP3 laptop.

I read here in this forum that re-soldering the USB-connector may help. Since I´ve never done a thing like that, I brought the G2 to a colleague of mine who´s capable of doing things like that; But he´s no musician and has never had something to do with synthesizers.

He told me he already measured everything but can´t find any broken connections. He connected the G2 to his computer, but nothing happened too (no query for required drivers etc.).
But to be sure he asked me if I can bring him a circuit diagram so he can dig deeper with his measuring without having to guess so much.

Does anybody possess a circuit diagram of a Nord Modular G2 (keyboard) and would be willing to send it to me ?

THANX a LOT in advance,
Markus

keeping my fingers crossed!

Re-soldering is for a broken USB. Or worn out one. I have to do this shortly. Sometimes it seems if a routine is stuck in the G2. A way is to 'reset' the thing by pressing 10 times on/off. Hope this helps.

Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen. .. aah, .. "the IT crowd"-trick ? sun-spots anybody?
No, I haven´t done that yet.
Will try it, but will also try [PERFORMANCE MODE]+ [PATCH LOAD] during startup, which I found here somewhere too.
I saw you had the same problems once upon a time.
How did you solve it ?

Markus

I had it 2 times and yes, it solved my problem. Jan Punter tipped this off. Good luck!

As far as I know, there are no circuit schemes of NMG2. Maybe the guy at Encore electronics who made a new expansion board could make one coz' he had no problem examining the original expansion.

Dyuing USB chips is a common problem. What's worse, the corresponding USB chip "ISP1181BDGG" is marked as obsolete at Mouser, so finding one could be a problem.

Is there a way to find out if it´s my USB-chip that died, or something else ?
How can I separate the possible sources for my broken USB-connection ?
Is there an indicator which will tell me (measuring) that it´s the chip that died ?

You can measure for continuity between the 4 connectors in the usb port and points on the circuit board that the corresponding usb port pins lead to. If these connections prove to be in order, and your computer does not "see" the G2, there is a good chance that the usb chip will have to be replaced.

Check for proper voltages on the proper pins. If any are grounded out, it's dead.

Hi,

I had a lightning strike destroying my USB connection on the G2. I got help for around 250 € here:

http://www.synthesizerservice.de/

For this prize they replaced a led display as well which did not lit up. Pretty fair price. recommended by me...

Greets,
Chris aka general elektrick

A circuit diagram for NMG2 is a big thing. It basically requires reverse engineering the hardware, which equals time & skill. I'm currently trying to reverse G2 display board schematics because it has no DSP on board AFAIK. But it still requires bill of materials to be made, all of the electrical connections between components on the board (node list, sometimes called a net list) to be identified and so on.

..by the way.

I followed #General Elektrick 's advice and did contact "SynthesizerServiceDepartment".
If you do so, you get an email with an identification-number; pack your synth and write this number on the box and send it there (clever way of handling).
After a week I received a quote, two more weeks later I got my G2 back repaired.
It did cost around 250Euro.
According to SynthesizerServiceDepartment the reason is electrostatic charge when plugging the USB-cable.
The repair he did to the USB-connector did cure this too, so it should never happen again.
I´m HAPPY
