Hey all,

I'm a jazz pianist and an undergrad at Princeton University majoring in computer science. This semester for an independent research project, I'm making a hybrid digital/analog micro-sized subtractive synth. As part of the writeup for this project, I'm doing a short, 5-minute keyboard/synth use survey of electronic musicians. The link to the survey is here: http://goo.gl/8A4XQ . I would really appreciate hearing your opinions!

If you have any questions about the survey, or are interested in the results or my project, either post here or shoot me a PM. All the hardware and code will be open-sourced at the end of the academic year (early June).

Hi Jeff welcome to e-m

I did your survey, thought the Q about when did you start learning to play a keyboard was funny as i never have learnt to play tho i have been making blipblop noises on synths for ... Embarassed 18 years now.

Thank you so much for taking the survey and welcoming me so kindly! If anyone's interested, I'll post the data here when done. I have 76 responses so far after just 12 hours (go internet!) It would be great if you could pass the survey onto any opinionated keyboard player or electronic musician friends you might have, as well.

Thanks again,

Jeff Snyder

same here .. and its all a bit one sided on subtractive, but that was explained in the OP I see now ... anyway, I mostly make self playing patches and like to have all stuff modular and in one small box, like the Nord Modular, or the pacarana, no need to stick to one particular way of making sound then.

So if I get it right you want to make a small subtractive MIDI controlled synth?

If so, seems like a good idea indeed to at least do LFO and Envelope stuff on a processor, good audio rate synthesis would probably be out of reach for a cheap system .. so I can see good use for analog there.

Anyway, just my ramblings Wink

Good luck with your project jsnydes, please post a bit about it here when you get it going!

I broke your survey!

I used the back button to recheck an answer and it got in an infinite loop about "Looks like you need to answer a question" on that page, despite the fact that all questions are answered. I break a lot of forms on the web with the back button, amazing.

Anyway, cool survey and welcome to em.

Les

good survey. Maaaan I really want to play jazz piano, though I've never had piano in my house Crying or Very sad So I play organ instead. I think you must think about user interface first (you are a piano player after all, not a tech!). Alternative MIDI controllers maybe? I think things like continuum are the future of keyboards. I really like the way Richard Pinhas of Heldon says about synths - they are like pallette of sounds I lay in background on which I can improvise on guitar.

Done. I figure I'll probably screw up your statistics pretty good, being a non-(traditional)musician who's totally uninterested in keyboards. But what the heck Wink
