emulate phonogene module: audio splicing, play backwards etc Subject description: record audio - loop - splice -jump - play backwards |
|
|
hi i dont own a G2 yet, but I was wondering if it would be capable of emulating a makenoise phonogene. This is a module that records a loop, splices it, and allows you to select the playback point, direction and speed. (+added fun with some modulation)
video with its functions

product page
http://www.makenoisemusic.com/Phonogene.html
Ive read a bit about all the modules, but so far i havent really found a solution for the above. |

I quickly glanced over the product description, and as far as I understood, my old DeluxeLooper patches do indeed go in that direction. However I wish to point out that I've refined my granular patching techniques a great deal since then, so those patches are quite out of date both sonically and feature-wise. I've sometimes thought of revamping them, but as I don't need them myself atm and I don't see anybody else here using them much either, I've let it be. If there's enough interest from the community, I might give it a shot.
I'll however stick out my neck and arrogantly assume that the G2 is capable of way more than that phonogene box. |

well... i'm from the community and i'm interested.
i use my nord g2 in tandem with an mpc 1000, so i like to feed samples from the mpc into the nord & mess about with them in realtime. your granular patches are great for that. |

Oh darn, I hoped no one would reply . OK OK, I'll try to have a go at it as time permits. Have 2 album production jobs to finish off first however.
By "revamping" I mean improving the granular core with the superior 4-grain-engine (used in PolyGranuSyn XL) that clocks at audiorate, resulting in way better audio quality and denser sound.
I can't promise. But I've made a mental note of this. |

I patched that slicer on the demo over breakfast once without trying it out. Happy to hear it actually works.
OK folks, you got me spiked. i just have a lot of studio/production/mixing work to do until mid June (besides my regular gigs) so I don't know when I'll have time. But it will definitely be the next G2 patching project. |

I don't know that phonogene but I'm always interested in loopers in G2 (all your works)
A midiclock free looper that can synchronize all G2 modules would be a great thing.... but it seems impossible, or would certainly be a lot of work (you know... a looper that gives the tempo to the other modules, like LFO)... and it's so easy to get that with ableton for example.
So I think more in treatment abilities like trying to emulate the sound of Metasonix KV100
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6y1KFuD0sk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IEYakABr0U
or the oto biscuit... but there is already an attempt here:
http://electro-music.com/forum/topic-40428.html
I'll try to soon combinate one of your loopers with that kind of treatment
And I even thought about a special echo that would be like a instant resampler... the objectif would be to destroy a little bit the sound between every repetition, like tape echos (or something more spectacular) and to be able to play each repetition in real time, like a percussion. Do you imagine a a keyboard player who captures one word of a singer and repeats that word, always more damaged?
That are thing I couldn't realize, like the imperfect analog squarewave sound I dream... but there are so many incredible tools I haven't tried yet... I should first try every patch of the list.
So thank you again |

Talking of the phonogene, have you all had a gander at the Rene by Make Noise? That thing is incredible, tried mucking around with something on the nord that could do something similar but there is no way youy could make something as versatile and tactile as that on here. Make Noise modules are the bomb though, had a play with a Maths a while back too and that thing is incredible. _________________ iP (Ross)

It's very easy to make something like the phonegene on the G2 with Tims patch. In fact it's already a phonegene. It has the same sample time, you can plug whatever module into the sampler to get it to playback anyway that you want it to. Just do some experimenting yourselves and see what you come up with. I've messed around with it and subtracted some modules and added others to make it do different things...
The Rene is a touch sensitive sequencer. I don't know if it has an LFO in it already or it you have to plug it into an LFO, and or other behavior like random, etc... |

That was my impression too. However, as I said, those are old designs -I have a far better sounding granular engine today.
I've been playing around with ideas in my head to do a new 1-bar-looper patch that combines classic looping, elastic audio and slicing/reordering/scrambling all in one package designed explicitly for live performance. |

It's not the food, it's the ADD. My brain works differently in the morning without meds and copious amounts of caffeine, which strangely is very conducive to G2 patching. Hyperfocus. |

Did anything ever become of this? I would LOVE to have a granular / tape type patch like this! |

it would be amazing to have g2 emulations not only of the Phonogene but all those other Make Noise modules. looking thru their website, they really have a lot of very interesting stuff there. a great source of inspiration & ideas.
i think the g2 is quite capable of reproducing what most of those modules do. maybe not with 100% accuracy but close enough. |
