After hearing about Max for years, I've decided to look into it.
I've just watched the demo video on the website and it looks very interesting.

In a way, it reminds me of Labview, but with more artistic capabilities.

While I do like to program, it seems like a lot of trouble to go to for sound generation & manipulation.

What do some of you do with Max?

thanks

Hello again,

I use it for granular synthesis, building synthesizers, drum machines, guitar effects, vocal manipulation and some other things I can't remember.

Other people use it for creating video effects triggered by sensors and stuff.
Lots of people seem to use wii or guitar hero controllers for some reason like:

Also, these guys have some great Max tutorials

I use it as a utility a lot. Things like processing MIDI, routing to more than one channel/hose/port, sequencing, etc.

And I've written some pieces using Max and MSP. Some cyclic drones for example.

I use it with my AudioCubes. They have an OSC server which Max can parse.

It makes a dandy audio processor too.

Don't get too hung up on how many things Max can do, or how many functions there are. A lot of my Max stuff is pretty simple.

Go through the tutorials though. This is very important.

I'm going through the tutorials now.
I was wondering if it could send/rec OSC messages. Osc is yet another new thing to look into.

I was fortunate to get a license for Max 6 while it was on sale.
It's very reasonably price given it's power.

Thanks. There's no shortage of reference material for Max.

I do almost everything in Max/MSP. I have a page describing Gyre, my main sequencer thingy, here: http://www.xfade.com/Gyre/

As part of the Max community, have a page of programs: http://www.xfade.com/max/

and a page of examples of various techniques: http://www.xfade.com/max/examples/

Thanks. I've seen your name recently regarding Buchla stuff.
I was hoping to find a local user group for Max/PD, etc. The only
one is the SF Electronic Music group on meetup.com, but it's not
Max-specific (nor is it close enough for me to go to).

I've been having fun going through the tutorials & viddys. There is
no end to the creativity that Max brings.

I will probably tap into it in conjunction with microcontrollers more than audio (at least initially), but I'm sure my interests will diverge quickly.
