Just noticed this one:

http://boodler.org/

This doesn't seem to be primarily aimed at music makers, rather it's a tool for making background sounds for interactive stuff like games or interactive fiction. It seems to be the creation of Andrew Plotkin, who has long been a prominent writer of interactive fiction (which some may recognise as "text adventures", games in the style of Infocom games from the 70s and 80s.

It looks useful, but I'm currently having a nightmare trying to install it.

I just unpacked the tarball and ran python setup.py build and python setup.py install according to the readme, and had no trouble.

On the other hand, the Gentoo ebuild is written wrong and results in errors. I'm going to see if I can fix that.

EDIT: Looks like they fixed it themselves. Now to play with it!

I think I have a handle on it. You guys let me know if you get stuck. I think this could be a great sound source for noodling/warping/filtering/modulating. It does seem to accept jack as an output device, but I get errors. Will see if Andrew left a way to be contacted.
