I think it's ghastly. Plasticy and flimsy with a bog standard keyboard. It hasn't got that "something" that the OP-1 has.

Argh, why did the OP-1 have to be brought up? The fact it was out of stock in just about all US stores helped me resist the temptation to get it, but now NovaMusik has it in stock, with $50 off all orders over $499.

Hm I'd say the OP-1 is totally different from almost anything else, so I don't know why it was brought up in this thread.

Anyway if you're trying to resist G.A.S. for an OP-1, check up the specs thoroughly before you take the plunge. There are some limitations that you may find frustrating. Not to say that I don't love mine! Smile

It was bought up on this thread, because design wise, the OP-1 is superior (in my mind) to this rather pointless monstrosity called the Neiro. I mean by all means YES, give us a large touch screen and all that yummy software, but change that gawd-awful keyboard and replace it with a Haken Continuum or the like because right now the bottom half looks no different from that multicoloured cheap plastic reed organ filth that filled local corner shops in the mid 1970's. Very Happy

The limitations of the OP-1 that I'm aware of, so far:

1. Keys are not velocity sensitive
2. Tape feature records up to 6 min. of audio
3. Drum sampler max recording times are short
4. No way to trigger sampling by footswitch (via MIDI or otherwise)
5. Probably some limitation on how many functions can be used simultaneously that might frustrate me later - eg. can I run a sequencer, manipulate Tape audio, and play synth chords over MIDI from, say, my Voyager, all at the same time?

I commute by train every day. I feel like I would be more productive creating music on this little guy than my iPhone, which I've had for a while now. To me, this outweighs the limitations.

I'll probably order it today, along with some Moog products to complement my preorder of the new Moog delay pedal - a VX-351 so I can send CV from the Voyager to the delay, and 2 EP-2 expression pedals so I can control some parameters on the Voyager and the delay pedal with my foot.

OK to continue the OT: Smile

6) There is no audio editing as such - you can cut bits of tape with coarse precision
7) You need to manually trigger everything, so synchronizing to the tape takes a bit of practice
8 ) A handful of synth engines that are awesome but none mimic the traditional subtractive synth signal route, so a bit of rethinking there if you're not used to weird digital synths
9) Low-ohm headphones don't work very well because of digital hiss when listening on low volume. This is caused by the fact that the volume is set before the dac. This can be fixed by having some way of adjusting the volume outside the OP-1.
10) You can save two mixes, each 6 minutes long, but after that you need to connect to a computer to save your work.

Just playing devil's advocate here, as I said I love mine and think it was worth every krona! Smile

/Stefan

OT;

*You buy* an OP-1 because it is a musical Ikon of beautiful aesthetic product design for making reasonable chaotic and roughish electronic music (I LOVE it for this).

*You don't buy* an OP-1 to have a portable replacement for your DAW.

Alternatively, think of yourself as Wendy Carlos and Delia Derbyshire as they both became acquainted with the VCS3.

Or think of it simply as 'Marmite'.

Wink

I am fine with the tape cutting being coarse. I don't expect it to be a full-powered DAW, just a fun portable writing machine with some live performance potential. I watched (possibly re-watched) a Youtube video demonstrating one way of creating beats on the OP-1 and the UI looked intuitive and inviting, and editing sequences looked super-easy. I'm also fine with manually triggering stuff that I may wish to overdub to Tape.

My childhood listening experiences included the synth sounds of the Yamaha DX7, the various Atari and Nintendo video game soundtracks, the Commodore 64, the early PC soundcards that were FM-based rather than sample based... all digital synths! So "true analog sound" isn't what I'm expecting from the OP-1. I like what I've heard so far.

I currently use ordinary Skullcandy earphones to listen to stuff on my iPhone, so I'll just have to hear how they sound with the OP-1.

Sounds like if I write an epic composition, I will need to break it up into sections of not more than 6 min. in length, and not more than 2 6 min. sections per commute on the train (my ride is about 25 min each way). Laughing I suppose that could be irritating, but I'll have to see.

Thanks for the info, Stefan, and sorry for the continued hijack of the thread... and also thanks for being so cool with the hijack!

Oh damn, I just saw an Octatrack on sale for $970.

Crap! Octatrack or OP-1.... OP-1 or Octatrack...
