help selecting a controller for my son bday |
|
|
hello everyone
my son and i play multiple instruments together (it is our hobby) and he was talking about wanting some kind of "midi / controller" for making music with the computer.
usually i wouldnt even know where to start but i checked the browser history and saw that a couple "controllers" came up. they were the APC 40 and the MPC 1000.
i youtube searched both of them and saw two different things. the MPC 1000 seemed like you could just make music live by recording however many bars you wanted to and then looping it where as the APC 40 seemed like you had to map it out first. im not sure if im correct about this or not. does the APC 40 have that same function?
sorry for not having a clue about this i usually stick to playing with strings (: and hopefully i even put this in the correct spot
any help would be greatly appreciated with the two.
thank you

The APC is more or less designed to work with Ableton Live. (the "APC" stands for "Ableton Performance Controller"). They can fairly easily work with other applications, but they are really made for that. The APC 40 lacks velocity sensing buttons if I recall, so that might not be a great performance choice for someone who needs velocity sensitive pad buttons.
"MPC" on the other hand stands for "MIDI Production Center". That box will sequence MIDI, collect samples, and allow ad hoc performance over sequences. And the pads are velocity and pressure sensitive.
So it kind of depends on what your son wants to do. They are quite different controllers. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

The MPC1000 is a stand-alone music production box, it is mainly used to record short bits of audio (samples) which are then triggered from the internal sequencer. In other words, it can make sounds of its own, all you need to do is plug it into an amp. It can also control other synths via MIDI. You can use it to control software, but there are better suited controllers for that purpose.
The APC40 on the other hand will not have much of a function without a computer. It does not produce any sounds of its own, and does not even have MIDI, only USB, which means that it can only connect to a computer. Also, it has been made to control Ableton Live, a popular music making software for DJ's and musicians. You can probably use it with other software, but it seems to be streamlined towards that specific one. _________________ Muied Lumens Sub Forum

They are both completely different products as mentioned above. But you should check out a Native Instruments Maschine. It is very similar to the MPC. But the MPC is all hardware where the Maschine focuses more on software and has the software needed(included with the drum pad) to produce your own music. I have one and absolutely love it. |
