Not sure if this has been discussed before, but ive seen these

http://www.rapidonline.com/Electrical-Power/Stontronics-PowerLD-15V-DC-125W-Open-Frame-Power-Supply-Unit-PSF-125-15-90-2562

and am wondering if they are useful in a synth environment, also as they only seem to come in +V flavour, is it possible to get -V out of it?

There are dual (+ / -) types as well, maybe not on that site though. Some say don't some say do (it has been discussed here before) ... I would just use 'm, but maybe not the open frame type (as it would be easy to touch the mains voltage in those).

I've been using a switching supply since I started a few months back. I've heard that they can lead to noise, but I haven't done anything really sensitive or maybe I've just lost too much of my upper register to hear it. I do have a PowerOne linear on my "official"rack now but I haven't used it enough yet to note any difference since I don't have a fully functional VCA (still building....).

I plan to continue using the switching supply for bench work regardless.

Edit: and the one I'm using is a +15/-15/+5 supply....so they're out there and definitely useful.

Any switching supply noise should be well above the human hearing range. However your electronics can hear into the megahertz! A differentiator circuit I made for my analogue synth a little while back was incredibly susceptible to noise, a switchmode supply would drive it crazy Laughing
