I am looking for an x/y touch controller... er... a 2D ribbon? like a kaoss pad? but I'm looking for just the component so I can hook it up to a miditron or phidget board.

any ideas? googling for this turns up a lot of red herrings...

I've played around with a 4 Wire resistive touchscreen. You could hook one of these up to a microcontroller (arduino...) and output a MIDI signal on the micro's UART.

4 Wire Resistives are interesting, you have to toggle your X and Y readings to change from Inputs to Outputs. There's tutorials out there that are Arduino based for using these, I don't know if anybody has canned code for the MIDI application however.

There is a midi library for the arduino. http://arduino.cc/playground/Main/MIDILibrary Or, you could create your own midi code.

While the arduino is certainly one route, I assume there are other options as well.
