Subject description: Possible to capture MIDI program change sequences?

Hello all!

Is it possible in some kind of way to fetch incoming MIDI program changes (in a non-rapid sequence)?

Where I then by converting each one of them to a equivalent Note Number, can record them into the SeqNote module, and later on recall them?

Thanks in advance!
Mike

Thanks, suspected that. Just wanted so see if anyone of you smart guys somehow figured out any workaround...

/Mike

There is a very slight chance that there might be a workaround, but it would be so tedious and klutzy and quite impractical.

What you would need is a number of simple patches in one bank, which do nothing but output their midi patch number as a constant value either through an interslot bus or through a MIDI controller message, to another patch that detects these changes and records them.

The problem here is that the program change will force the entire G2 to recompile, thus resetting the sequencer position in the recorder circuit and thus losing track of the changes you want to record.

I have never tried this, but if MIDI controller values are preserved over a recompilation, one could maybe abuse a MIDI controller as a non-volatile self-modifying counter that then advances the recording sequencer back to the last position after a recompilation by firing audio rate triggers at it.

So far the theoretical conjecture. Laughing If the MIDI controller values are preserved, there is a good chance of it working. If somebody wants to try this, please let me know the results. Just assign an external controller to a G2 module knob, wiggle it to a specific position and then load some patch into another slot, forcing the G2 to recompile, and check back if the knob is still at the new position.

But as mentioned in the beginning, the whole idea means tediously filling up a whole patch bank with these otherwise quite useless patches.

Hi Tim!

I was thinking about something very basic along the line of what you mention, but quickly disregarded that idea. Since, even for a stupid patcher like me, taking up one slots DSP for perhaps 128 "program send patches" doesn´t really seems like a efficient use of the G2, does it? Even though it may be possible, it wouldn´t really be worth it after all anyway.

Nope, seems the MidiSolutions Event Processor Plus combined with G2 might be the way to explore furter. That problem (prg change) and the Mackie Control Protocol (that I pm:ed and asked you about some time ago), might eventually make the Event Processor Plus worth its cost.

Oh, and by the way Tim... if I may hi-jack my own thread: Confused Rolling Eyes

I e-mailed MidiSolutions regarding using the Event Processor Plus for Mackie Control messages. Their response were that it MIGHT be possible, but didn´t really know anything about that protocol.
They recommended me to fetch the data from a controller (i e Behringer) and a audio interface (i e RME), and then send that data information for them for analysis...

Only some minor things that bugs me with that idea: I´ve got no controller nor any audio interface. Quite expensive way to find out if something perhaps gonna work or not, don´t you think?

Since the G2 handles the patch memory dynamically (and occasionally likes to crash because of that Laughing) those 128 patches would at least not eat up much memory because they are small. But it's very klutzy.

If that event processor can convert PC into CC, your PC recorder should be easy to do.

It really does sound like an interesting little box that might cover the blank spots in the G2 MIDI functionality. I don't mean this to slight the G2 MIDI features, imho it's the most powerful hardware device for MIDI ever built.

Telling me? Laughing Added together over the years, I spent a decent five digit sum trying to find solutions for specific musical requirements. The G2 changed that a lot. It's not perfect and it drives me nuts sometimes, but on the bottom line it has recouped its expenses more than anything else I've ever bought because it covers so much ground.

Not to dismiss the previous answers- take a look at Midiox (Windows) or Bomes (OSX). Midiox does allow you to do some remapping & scripting
of midi events. But like Tim mentioned such an implementation would be cumbersome and would require a PC or Mac running.

I seem to recall another midi remapping tool that has some unique and unusual features, but cannot remember the name.
