I thought I had posted links to two articles on doing Arduino/AVR interrupts, but I couldn't find them. So here they are:

I have been exploring the use of serial ports and interrupts related to midi i/o and have some concerns about overhead (and latency). I stumbled onto this article, which might be useful, so I thought I'd post it here:

http://billgrundmann.wordpress.com/2009/03/02/the-overhead-of-arduino-interrupts/

Also: http://arduinomega.blogspot.com/2011/05/setting-interrupts-manually-real-int0.html

And if overhead/latency is really a significant problem, there's this:

See also a new thread on AVR/Arduino Interrupts:

Nick Gammon has his own Arduino forum, answers many questions, as well as posting his own findings on the Arduino. I've found his site to be very helpfull.

This page http://www.gammon.com.au/forum/?id=11488 contains a lot of information from his research on Arduino interrupts (Pin Change interrupts, Timer interrupts and external interrupts).

I hope it will be of help in your projects as well.

While researching possible uses for MIDI Note Off velocity, I stumbled onto a thread at AVRfreaks that discusses programming midi directly for the AVR. I didn't fully digest the entire thread (or some of the relevant links posted there), but it does seem potentially useful. So, here's the link just in case anyone else might benefit.)

This article refers to the Arduino pin change interrupts.
I've posted a URL in this forum about a library for them. This library has recently been modified to support the 2560. I don't know the progress of that addition though. The documentation for the pin change interrupts talks about the library overhead and using different modes as a tradeoff between performance and memory.

Given that midi events are so slow by today's standards, one would think a microcontroller running at 16MHZ would be plenty fast to catch & process slow midi events, with ease.

OTOH, I recently read a scathing article about how bad GCC is. Unfortunately, there was no data to support those claims about the compiler.
