This problem was apparently also noticed by Blue Hell.

To tell the thruth ... you did have to put one and one together for me, but they are added now here as well Laughing Good work !

A phase issue as you mention it makes the patches incomparable indeed, as even two runs from the same synth may sound different.

BTW, mp3's may not be ideal to compare sounds, but when a difference in sound is clear enough the resulting mp3's will be different as well. It may not be easy to hear what the nature of difference was, while it may still be clear that in fact there was a difference in the pre-encoded signals. A measuring device may not be ideal and still be usable at the same time.

About the phase differences...
In the beginning of the Classic period I made some FM patches, which I changed using a early Palle Dahlstedt tool, a Randomizer. The most exciting sound would come alive. After saving, the again loaded patch was totally dull... Rob Hordijk pointed it out as a phase problem.

Oh yes, I agree with you Blue Hell that not all MP3s are totally useless - just as long as the encoding process (and playback) does not create artifacts more horrible than the one trying to be exposed in the sound source!

But, I have to admit, the first draft of my first reply to this topic had a more strident rant against using MP3s for a critical listening test. I did edit it back down to the relatively mild one sentence statement that made it into the final draft. Smile

Good point Wout. The situation of "why does this patch sound different this time than it did before?" can sometimes be traced back relative waveform phase issues.
