yesterday, while waiting for my iron to heat up, I noticed an offcut of perfboard that had chipped off an edge when i was cutting it, while I was absent-mindedly staring at it, I wondered what i could build on that small piece, then I wondered what any of you guys could make too.

therefore, I challenge everyone to make a circuit that:

1) makes noise!!!
2) takes up NO MORE than 30 holes on perf/stripboard

there are no prizes for this challenge (because im broke Razz)

look forward to seeing your builds.

What a good idea. I have a box of little pieces of stripboard here. So just to be clear, with 30 holes, that could be a 6 hole by 5 strip board right? Question

But if you didn't need a hole/s could you drill it out and drop the hole count!? Twisted Evil Shocked Rolling Eyes Laughing

I think no piggy-backing components should be a rule... and no off the board component wiring... no sculptural open space wiring, point to point or whatever it is called. That would be defeating the purpose. Not much room on that size board. Hopefully this will get beyond a load of two transistor multivibrators.

It doesn't really leave much left, does it? Laughing

We could always go and buy a load of musical greetings cards and hack them or use flashing led's.

I had thought about that, (just had a tea-candle-LED modulated AMV breadboarded) but somehow that feels like cheating.

I think we will all just have to make our own parameters up for ourselves. It's 30 holes of stripboard. I'm going to try do it in 3! Shocked Laughing

played a bit more with a 2 transistor AMV,
replaced resistors with LDR's, changed the circuit a bit and to my surprise I got it oscillating with 1 capacitor. Very Happy

didn't realize how small 30 holes actually was untill I cut the perf Shocked
the design was a bit trickier then I expected too,
but I managed to get it on there.

the 4 pins it stands on do have a function, 2 are for power, the other 2 are connected together and can be used
as a line out.

nice perferted challenge bubzy! Laughing

Well done! Looks good... like a little bunch of electronic mushrooms. Some sound recording would be nice Wink .

It does pretty much come down to transistors. There isn't room for an IC... unless you want to go opening the cases. Of course there is the option of making your own custom components if that is not cheating.

EDIT: also, there is a distinct advantage with perf. You don't need to sacrifice holes to make a break in the track.

Very Happy how about a video:

I might record some sounds too,. (I wanna hear it with delay Wink)

you could put a dual opamp on there, but not much room for other components left if you do. Rolling Eyes
and yeah, good luck using stripboard, that's gonna be a REAL challenge Twisted Evil

You could stand an opamp or other 8 pin DIP on its side making it only 2 holes wide on perf or 3 on vero. You could get it 2 on vero if you made trace cuts between holes rather than through them, or would that be cheating?
The same trickery would just about allow a 14 pin DIP for some CMOS fun.

Edit:
after rereading slackers post......

i cant see why we cannot "creatively" mount components, so long as we dont reduce the number of holes they use. i think reducing the number of holes they "waste" is PERFectly acceptable.

Possibly the ILC (International Lunettic Committee) will reject my entry because
- in two places a hole is used twice (the wires on AA and FB)
- one component (C2) is half-offboard
- the circuit is not my design, it is a Sudo-Mini by John Richards (http://www.dirtyelectronics.org/docs/sudomini.zip)
- I have not built and veryfied it yet.

But as it is about taking part, not about to win, here it is (24 holes): Smile

No seriously, F*** the ILC! They are all Flat Earthers. Laughing

At 24 holes if you went down the perf route you could add another 4 and fit that cap on could you not? Although part of its charm is the cap hanging over the side.
