Subject description: delayed power on for my AKAI S3000
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

Hi,

I recently put an internal SCSI HDD into my AKAI S3000 (not XL).

When I power up the sampler the HDD starts to spin, and the sampler boots up. However, the HDD takes too long to spin up and get ready, so I ALWAYS get the message "disk read error" when the AKAI tries to load its operating system.

I noticed that if I power the HDD from an external PC power supply, wait for it to spin up, and THEN power up the AKAI, everything is peachy.

Now, I found several 555-based timer circuits online which will close a relay after a user definable time (I figure 3 seconds would be enough in my case), so I thought I´d put one of those into my AKAI as follows:

The main power switch fires up the internal power supply, which immediately drives the HDD. Also connected is the timer circuit, which after 3-4 seconds closes a relay that makes the power connection to the sampler mainboard - the sampler boots up, and is able to read from the HDD at once, because that is finished spinning up.

WHAT KIND OF RELAY DO I NEED? My supplier carries sooo many of them and I have no idea what to look for (Reichelt.de)

Do I need one "double" relay or two single ones? They must operate on either a 5V or 12V power supply, and be able to switch a 5V and a 12V line simultaneously. Dunno if that is correct terminology...

The delayed power on circuit that I plan to use is "circuit 2" on this page.

Any pointers would be very much appreciated!

Christian

Hi creekree
check the CGS site he has a power delay board on there
its actually to get around inrush surge currents on larger systems
so possibly wouldnt get you a long enough delay as it is but
at least it may give you some pointers for the direction to go
I think he may also suggest a relay to use so that may help.
if you are trying to switch 12v and 5 volt lines then single relay with double pole switching
probably easiest if the coil is 12 volt rated
most important is the switch contact current rating I would recomend aiming for at least double the power requirement of the drive or the sampler which ever is higher
