Furniture bending. Ideas on how to use existing furniture as DIY modular cabinet.
My daughter just cried out upstairs. Part of her book shelves had felled over. When sorting out the mess after the accident I came to realize that the Benno DVD/CD shelf from Ikea does not have to stand up. Thinking about it I remembered seeing someone using these shelves laying down in a place where the height up to the roof didn’t allow for it to stand up.
Laying down the inner height of the Benno is 16cm. With very little effort one can saw of 3cm from the top and bottom shelf (now left and right panel) and viola, one have a 3U rack cabinet approx. 378HP long (189cm).
One could cut it in half for stacking, or use the leftovers as stand for the cabinet.
As I’ve never had an original idea in my life it would be fun if someone would post pictures and tell us what experience they have with Benno and other furnitures.

Some of us were also using the RAST end tables as 19" racks.
You got 6U on the top section and 2U underneath. |

Ikea also has/had some things that are great for 19" rackmounted stuff (examples)

Nice cab.
Danno Gee Ray. Yes I've seen the RAST used as 19" rack. Guess my inspiration to see the Benno as a music furniture came from those pictures.
I'm thinking if your studio is crammed you could mount the modules in the the BENNO standing up also. I did that with a pedal board I made. Used a aluminium rail craftsmen use as straitening tool. Mounted to the wall with one screw I had a single row 14cm by 200cm long pedal board with nearly zero footprint.
Where do you shop for rack rails for Eurorack these days? Prices seems to differ a lot. I like the ones using nuts, but strips is ok. I can always cut them i shorter length to accomplish similar function as loose nuts give. |
