hi all,

been absent quite a while now! I've all but given up, but I just moved to London (one of those life-changing ventures) and am still looking for a flat/room. Plus all of my tools and parts are still sitting in Vienna waiting to be shipped here, so as much as I'd love to get going on some more Lunetta (and other) projects, I'm still forced to exercise patience!

Hope to be back in action soon! And good luck/success to all of you lucky ones who are actually able to built stuff! Wink

cheers, th

Welcome to the UK welcome I wondered where you'd gone...

For many years I lived in London, but for various reasons, I ended up in Aldershot (which is not too far away). Hope that you settle in soon and can get back to the noise making! JingleJoe's gone very quiet lately, but he also said he was moving, so he probably has more urgent things to do at the moment.

Well actually, that was a bit nasty. Sorry about that. I'll try and behave myself.

Thanks!
and sorry, been a while again.

Found a flat and am slowly but steadily making progress towards a general direction of 'normality'! (;

will be going back to Arghstria for a week at the beginning of December and then take care of having my electronics equipment shipped over here.

On that topic - does anyone here know of any 'walk in' stores (chains, etc.) here in London where I could get a few parts/breadboard, new soldering station (which I'll need anyways), etc.
Or anything - apart from looking at charitiy shops in the hope of stumbling upon some lucky finds - that might be of interest?
If so, thanks in advance.

Meanwhile I'll be starting to get back to do some theoretical learning again and have the occasional session of delighting myself with some schematics-pr0n!

Looks like I won't make it in time to be an official part of this years Lunetta Challenge (may have been a bit too optimistic on that), but then again, it's always good to challenge oneself, innit!

best, th

Hi TH, hope that you're now settling in a bit.

When I left London, the main walk-in store seemed to be Maplin Electronics, which had a good range of (largely overpriced) components. Now, they seem to have become a gadget shop and their electronic component range is VERY limited (and still overpriced). They do have some reasonably priced breadboards and soldering equipment though. Use the link to find the one that's closest to you:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/

I tend to get most of my components by mail order. Here are a list of links to the companies I've ordered from recently:

Rapid Electronics http://www.rapidonline.com/
ESR Electronics http://www.esr.co.uk/

Both of these have a good range of the more common components and are both reasonably priced (I tend to order from both simultaneously, checking who has the best prices for each component).

Farnell Electronics http://uk.farnell.com/

These have a massive range of components, so I use them mainly for more specialised components that I cannot get from the above. They tend to be a bit more pricey.

Cricklewood Electronics http://www2.cricklewoodelectronics.com/Cricklewood/home.php?xid=75aa6526db873275fbd9b36d75deb554

Good for obsolete components (e.g. the 4006 shift register) but you pay more for them because they're obsolete and the prices keep rising the rarer they get.

There may be smaller electronic shops around in London, but as I don't know exactly where you are, I can't help too much. I knew of Direct Electronics which is in Manor Park, east London, but their website seems to be in the process of being built, so I can't see what they sell really.

Anyway, it's worth searching on Google - you might find something in your area.

thanks Gary and Jingle Joe,

I'm in the west at/near Shepherd's Bush for the time being.
checked out the nearest Maplin at Hammersmith. (and their website)
might be ok to quickly get some parts (given they have it), but yes, they seem somewhat pricey.
as far as tools/breadboards etc. go it looks ok though!
I guess for future purchase of parts and more I'll rather rely on mailorder!

guess I'll wait until after next week when I'll be sending all the parts I already have over from the 'old homestead'. (I went on a pretty exhaustive spending spree before moving anyways, so it wouldn't make much sense to go spending again, as London is expensive enough and my savings are dwindling as it is.)

but it is nice to find some time for the subject matter again, even if for a few more days at least it will remain in the field of theory(;...

But I thought that it was grim up north Laughing Actually, it's probably grimmer (is that a word?) where I live...

Additional: I pulled the posted image JUST in case I feel the hand of the copyright police on my shoulder - I know, I'm a coward...

...or a broom cupboard in Knightsbridge. And let's face it, who doesn't want to live in a broom cupboard in Knightsbridge.
