Android App for (semi-)professional recording |
|
|
Which android smart phone has the best mics and pre-amplifiers?
Short background:
I professionally record speech and also music/singing since 10 years. When somebody calls me to do recordings in the field, I usually use my Fostex FR2LE with two Rode NT1A.
Since a year I own a Samsung Note and was wondering if there's an app giving me similar possibilities to do almost high-quality recordings. I tried a lot, but at the end I made the "Field Recorder", as I also am an audio and dsp programmer since long.
This software fulfills my needs as it has pre-record, recording equalizer, limiter and soft-clipping and very precise level meters, but it also allowed me to recognize that the hardware is a serious drawback.
The devices I tested:
The noise floor of my Note is 65dB below clipping (read from my meter) in mono, but in stereo it is only 40dB due to an internal AGC made by Samsung. Additionally the right channel has more high-frequency noise floor and a very low but regular click due to the internal power supply.
I also tested the Sony Xperia T which has much better stereo modes, also without any Samsung processing, but has its noise floor at -55dB.
Now my question: Please let me know about your experience with various android smart phones!
The answers hopefully are very useful for other people interested to do good-quality recordings with their phones or even buy their new phone depending on its audio hardware properties.
(If there is some interest, I am willing to provide special audio test signals to measure frequency transfer function and dynamic properties.) |

The repetition rate of the click is reduced tremendously when I switch the phone to "flight mode" (which is a good idea anyway to avoid phone calls within a record).
