Panel wiring help |
|
|
Hi,
I've been at building synths for quite a long time now, but admittedly the insides of them are a mess. What sort of techniques can be done to clean up wires and stuff from turning into a rats nest?
here is one of my recent builds, with an ugly ratsnest inside.
i was thinking of only having wires come from one side of the board with wires going to the controls. this would allow cables to be bunched without obscuring the board too much...
what techniques do some of you neat folks use to keep things looking nice on the inside? |

I never really got a grip on neat wiring myself, rather developed PCBs that have virtually no wiring - mount pots directly.
the best way to learn is to examine the work of those that do wire nicely
and one of those is the Electronic peasant

here's examples from his site -

ive found ribbon cables to be an awesome boost to the tidyness of my panel wiring.
you can split them off as much as you need to reach but still leave them attached in the center, if you spend a bit of time designing, its likely you can avoid splitting the ribbon cables too much.
they arent cheap though (i use 20w Rainbow Ribbon)
RAINBOW RIBBON 0_o sounds like a "my little pony" _________________ _Richard_ |

Could anyone recommend a source for ribbon cable? I've looked at all the usual places and it looks like almost everything is 28. |

I use clear heat shrink cable instead of zip ties to create looms of cable. The only drawback is I need to be extra careful with planning of wire runs. |

Clear spiral wrap is good, (the small one (4mm?)) cos you can add wires later. Don't do one big run, do small sections. Easier to undo later when you need to. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

Yeah, I would only be looking at ribbon cable for making power cables. I can't find and 20 AWG ribbon cable though. |

I started using ribbon wire 30 AWG and i just strip it as needed into individual strands or keep it in ribbon format linked together depending on the wiring.. I just picked up this book called 'Handbook of Wiring, Cabling and Interconnecting for Electronics' - Harper. Seems like it might be the bible for wiring.. _________________ Dave
