Hello - Can anyone shed some light on the Real Ring Modem?

http://www.cgs.synth.net/modules/cgsrmodem.html

How does this differ (sonically speaking) from using just one ring mod? Are there any hidden benefits that I'm not seeing?

It is just some effect you can obtain by using two ring modulators ... it is not that it is a different ring modulator, just two being used.

As the modulators are not ideal I'd expect some distortion and some remaining sum and difference frequencies ... as in shortwave radio like sounds ... could be interesting with some filtering in the modulated signal before demodulating.

But then again I never tried it ...

I have one. It definitely sounds different from my MFOS ring modulator. I'm glad I have both. I should do an A/B and record the difference...

I have one also. The thing is called 'real' because this is the schematic used in the 50's. It is easy to build using 1:1 transformers and germanium diodes.

The interesting thing of setting up a ring modulator-demodulator is to insert processors between the two sections,
so at the end of it (at the output of the demod) you don't have the original signal back (as originally designed by radio engineers in XXth century)
but something musically interesting! : )
