When Stephen Vale is synthrabbi he tested too - I'll assume that for now and put a * on him.

Thanks, Blue Hell,

Yeah, sorry about all the confusion. I probably should've just stuck with synthrabbi. Sounds like the better stage name.

And, it's a distinction: I am probably the only Rabbi anywhere in the world playing electronic music streaming tomorrow. Probably on any day of the week, but especially tomorrow since it's the Sabbath.

Who the hell knows: I might be the first Rabbi to do this anywhere ever… Possibly in history!

But my clergy days are over. I'm just not that guy.

I do know all of our ancient ancestors used to play electronic music only by candlelight. You can look it up.

All I know is I'm happiest when I'm playing music.

Thanks to all those who are making it possible for all of us to be able to express our creativity in this way.

Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

I have decided to christen my contribution to the event Unit Impulse.

I conceived of the piece a few years ago, when thinking of how the banjo's rapid attack and decay is somewhat an approximation of the unit impulse.

I was going to compose it for electro-music 2012, but then zero-input mixing possessed me.

Jeremy helped me capture several one-open-G-note samples from my trusty Bart Reiter Whyte Ladie 5-string earlier this week. (You'll shoot your eye out, kid!) We settled on the one in the first photo and the audio sample below. That is the only sound in my upcoming performance, albeit processed somewhat using Ableton Live, Kyma (the Pacarana is hiding behind the laptop) and the effects unit in the Yamaha MG124cx mixer. I decided to toss in the mixer in solidarity with Ganzha (see above) and also State Machine (I used it in all my zero-input mixer sessions).

There are 5 movements as I am now practicing the piece. Each one gets initiated by a button on the Trigger Finger, and each has a fader there as well. Once a movement's "Live stochastic state machine" thus goes into motion, it's all about mouse and keyboard twiddling inside of Ableton, along with detours into Kyma and the mixer. That one note gets around.

Counting down the hours party time!

And my set - sorry for the nasty beeps here and there - no idea where those came from Shocked

Edit: Ah, found it - one of the pitch followers got no signal and stayed on a high pitched note - that's what you get for making last minute changes I guess.

Here's my set, was going to cross-fade it where the stream dropped but just removing the gap seemed to work Smile

It was inspired by my walk home in the snow just before my set

Using very minimal gear, OP-1 and iPads running samplewix, animoog and TNR-i, the tenori-on app, as I didn't even have time to plug in the hardware version Smile

Had a great time playing the event ! Thanks to the organizers who made it possible and thanks to all my friends who listened in on the show. Of course I must thank my good friends who came over to join in and play, Mike, Dan, and Matt !!

This set was more of an experiment in zero input mixing, feedback, and chaos using an analog mixer with four channels feeding back into themselves with Korg QUAD digital effects in the feedback path of two channels of the mixer. Other sounds provided by a DIY digital Fraktal synthesizer. Accompaniment by Dan Battaglia using Native Instruments Reaktor Skanner.

Thanks for listening !
Bill

Hello folks,

I couldn't make it to the live event, but hopefully you recorded it well
and the uploaded sounds are amazing so far, it must have been a great
celebration!

Anyway, here is my off-stream contribution to this equinoxe party!
This is a two players live, recorded in two pass.
First pass was mc808 drums, andromeda sustainator background and a
taurus bass from a Virus.
Then a melodic improv with an OP-1 string synth and a Virus high pitched
voice.

Thank you all!

Here is my recording of the set that I performed on the electro-music March 2013 Equinox event.

Of note is that on the first half of the set, I utilized the Yusynth Steiner Voltage-Controlled Filter. I mention this because the topic of this filter surfaced recently in the DIY threads here.

I also make heavy use of a couple of DIY modules that I built from PCB's that are sold here at electro-music.com: namely a pair of Mega Percussive Synthesizers (modified to allow them to be voltage-controlled) and the Klee Sequencer. Besides the drum sounds, the high-pitched bell-like sounds were made with the MPS.

In may ways, this set is a continuation of the set that I did at the New Years Eve event -- this one is a bit punchier and a little more abstract than the NYE set.

As always, I appreciate the opportunity to participate and am grateful for the efforts of the stream operators and the support of the EM community.

Well, one nice thing about BUTT is you can set it to auto record. Of course, that doesn't count when you connect up 10 minutes early, think "oh let me stop the recording, of course I'll remember to turn it back on before I go live" and then recall 5 minutes into the performance that you didn't actually restart the recording. So we miss the intro... This piece will end up being done over anyway, I quite like what it was doing, if I do say so myself.

I did a surprise set (and it was a surprise to me too) early on. Apologies for any undue overloads as I had things freeze up on me and couldn't adjust levels.

As usual, I'm downloading every file -- Saturdays tend to be pretty wild for me and I'm in and out of the studio.

I usually listen to music during the workday -- I have a nice pair of noise-cancelling headphones with excellent frequency response and usually have fewer interruptions during the workday than I do around here on the weekends.

I listen to people's tracks on on good equipment -- be it with headphones or speakers -- so much goes into the music that I want to experience it with high-quality sound.

I really appreciate that many of the participants record their sets and post them.
