Nevermind.

I decided against using a PC sequencer. I only really wanted super-accurate initial grooves to layer hand-played tracks on. I found another solution. My Boss BR-600 recorder has a rhythm editor and you can upload your own sounds to it. It's as simple a sequencer as I wanted. I had it all the time and just hadn't figured it out yet.

(I've been avoiding the use of sequencing in favor of hand-played music. But my tunes that are based on automated percussion or melodic lines sound much more solid than many of my all-hand-played tunes.)

Update October 2013:

I found an even better solution. I got a Korg Microsampler which has a quantize feature. This allows me to improvise new hand-played first lines and automatically correct them to rhythmic perfection. I can either sample sounds into the MS or play the MS sequence on another synth via MIDI.

Update March 2015:

Still using the Microsampler as a track tightener. It works great! I usually play all my boards via MIDI from the keyboard of a Yamaha PSR-520 rompler. Using a MIDI Solutions Quadra Thru, whatever I play on the PSR is sent to every other board. So I might be "playing" the CZ-101 but I can record the line I'm playing on the Microsampler at the same time, then MIDI the quantized track to the CZ. It only adds one simple step and my improvised line becomes a rhythmically-perfect base for my composition.

(Yes, I mean "base" not "bass." The first and most basic line might be a bass line but it doesn't have to be.)
