FSOL I never really connected with. The only one of theirs that I found remotely interesting was Lifeforms, but mostly because it was the first commercially successful abstract soundscape music I had ever found. And it was released in 1994, at which time a friend and I had been doing similar (and I think much more successful compositionally) music for at least 5 years (never officially released any of our work, though, so when Lifeforms was hailed as new and original, I suppose I felt a little chagrinned...oh well, marketing has never been a big skill of mine!). Anyway, I still find this one fairly arbitrary in its composition. There doesn't seem to be any control or intent, it all sounds fairly haphazard. Interesting sounds, total lack of interesting arrangement.

Lustmord is vastly more interesting, though the only work I have by him is Stalker, his collaboration with Robert Rich. Highly, highly recommended. The very best of dark ambient, IMHO.

The Residents? Ah, now you're talking my language. I'd say listen to everything they did up to The Commercial Album. After that I think they lost it totally. So that would include:

Meet the Residents – 1974
The Third Reich 'n Roll – 1976
Fingerprince – 1977
Duck Stab/Buster & Glen – 1978
Not Available – 1978
Eskimo – 1979
Commercial Album – 1980

The CDs include their singles releases, which were highly interesting as well.

welcome

Dont know enough from the residents to give a suggestion, and I don't think I've heard Lustmord, or maybe I have but without knowing what it was.

FSOL however is one of my alltime favourite bands and if you only want to listen to one album I would suggest Dead Cities myself. Lifeforms is
good too, and so is ISDN. Accelerator is not something I would recommend to get introduced to FSOL allthough it's nice to hear the progression
they made since then. And then there is The Isness which is an album I can imagine a lot of people probably don't like, but I like that one aswell
(especially the Galaxial Pharmaceutical! Shocked) The more recent Environments releases seem to contain a lot of different/new takes
and/or unreleased stuff from earlier albums but I'm not so familiar with them, yet Wink

Actually I pretty much like everything by FSOL a lot. I have some tapes I recorded from the live ISDN broadcast which I probably have
listened to over a hundred times by now and I still hear new sounds every time I listen. here's a part of a similar one:

(the essential mixes and other radio mixes are also worth a listen btw.)

rereading your question, I might have gotten that wrong and you mean the best 4 albums, well in that case: ISDN, Lifeforms, Dead Cities,
and you can give The Isness a try (don't start with it because it's not your usual FSOL) or maybe Alice In Ultraland (produced under the name
The Amorphous Androgynous).

A very good introduction to what Brian is up to is Carbon Core.

http://www.discogs.com/Lustmord-CarbonCore/release/254706

http://www.adnoiseam.net/store/lustmord-carbon-core_p3945.html

You can then work your way backwards and forwards in his discography from there.
