This is how I left it overnight -- with the middle brace clamped in both directions, the bottom rail clamped down (and screwed in the corners where it met the sides of the case), and the plug assembly glued and clamped.

Since the front lip of the case top was slanted at 11 degrees, part of the ebony rail protruded above the surface of the top. I used a block plane to take it mostly down to flush with the case top. After that, I resanded everything to get the ebony rails flush with the walnut surfaces.

Thanks to my wife, who came out and held panels in place while I drilled pilot holes -- a much more accurate method than marking them and then drilling IMO. I'll have to enlarge the pilot holes for the 16-step and the 940 -- the tiny brass screws that work perfectly for MFOS are too small for the standard MOTM screw hole.

I've got to tackle the back and the bottom panel, but that will have to wait for Monday -- I must paint tomorrow. Sad

But, hey, it looks like a case!

Cut off a slightly oversized (long) piece of a Walnut board to use to make the rails for the bottom section. I need to make a couple of vertical support pieces today, and do the back, then I'm pretty much ready to do the finish.

And here's the lower section mostly finished. I ran a couple of small vertical pieces to give support to the panels on the far right. I'll make a couple of caps to cover the gaps on either side, and cut out the back, then on to finishing (and wiring!)...

I think the last bits requiring glue are now curing! I've still got to make the back, but that can be done separately.

First pic - this is why woodworker's shops look like a lumber yard, we can't bear to throw away any piece of wood bigger than a lighter.

I've had this walnut offcut laying around for years, apparently for just this occasion. I used a bevel profile router bit to shape the sides.

Next up, finishing! I used Micromesh pads to go from 1500 grit through 4000 grit. I'll save 6000 through 12000 for rubbing out the finish. After sanding, I attached the last two vertical support rails -- they are small enough that I wanted to sand them separately. The glue should be cured later this afternoon, and I'll be using a 50/50 mix of boiled linseed oil and turpentine.

Time for some money shots. I wiped on a heavy coat of the BLO/Turp mix. By the time I was done with everything, the first stuff I wiped on was ready to be wiped off with a clean cloth.

I let this sit for a couple of hours, then did it again. These were shot immediately after wiping on (and off) the second coat.

Thanks! Yeah, it's amazing the transformation.

I rubbed out the 2nd coat with 4000 through 12000 Micromesh, then applied a third coat of oil/turp last night before going to bed. I'll leave it in the shop with a fan circulating air for a couple of days before bringing it into the house so that it no longer smells like solvent...

Meanwhile, I'll put the hardware back on all the panels and attach long wires to the bits going in the bottom section that I'll cut to size later. Then it's on to bracket fabrication and wiring!

I managed to finish off the back about 10 minutes before my friend showed up to take all the weightlifting equipment away, and to help me load the tablesaw and bandsaw from the shop.

Unfortunately, I got a little carried away packing apparently, and the hinge screws to hold the back on are apparently in a box somewhere.

The first pic also shows where I had one final "ALLOW SPACE FOR HARDWARE" incident. I wish I had a pic of me holding this thing on the drillpress, but the missus was in Vancouver, and time waits for no man. It came out cleaner than I expected...

I've left the pots off of the 16-step until I'm ready to wire -- no point in collecting dust with them...

There's a For Sale sign in the yard, and all my electronic stuff is packed away. We bought a house in East Providence, and will be moving at the end of June.

I'll have to attack this with a vengeance this Fall, I think it will be September before I have a truly functioning lab again...

We're in Rhode Island now. I was pretty spot-on about when I'd get a functioning lab again -- we're still 2-3 weeks out from having the hardwood floors done in our offices, so right now the only thing I have is a couple of computers sitting on a $25 Target card table.

I'm really jonesing to have a working office again.

So close. The house is now finished off (nothing like parents flying in to motivate cleaning/unpacking). My new desk should be here next week so I can finally have some workspace again.

For some unknown reason, I packed the actual soldering iron in a different box than the power supply for it. Rolling Eyes I'm attacking the garage workshop today, I'm hoping it's in a box out there...

Nothing like gross optimism! It has now been just under a year since I worked on this. I found my soldering iron, and finally gave up and bought a new bending brake.

For those who have been following, you'll be happy to know that, in keeping with tradition, I spent the afternoon working on something that ended up not fitting because I didn't allow enough space for the hardware Smile

I'm just going to attach the bracket to the bottom of the case and go from there...

"real close" is very optimistic Smile But thanks. The weather is finally to the point where I'm spending weekends working on the yard and setting up the glass studio in the garage, but I should be back to soldering soon.

To somewhat make up for my lack of progress on my Ultimate build, I offer the following -- a MendelMax 1.5 clone built at AS220 Labs. A total of ten people built their own in a weekend.

Probably not, I like aluminum knobs. I *would* like to mill my own knobs, though.

Once I add a second extruder head, I'll be able to use a plastic that is water soluble for internal support, along with a non-soluble plastic, to make custom electroformed marble stands for my glasswork.

hmm yeah when i first started building my modular i wanted badly to use tele knobs on all of it but at better than $2.00 a knob, well too rich for me.
so i finally settled on a mix of davies 1500 and 1510 clones.
I did once mill some of my own out of 1/2 " aluminum round just using a pedastal drill, a cross slide vice and some shop made cutting bits - a lot of work
couple of days for 30 or so and one larger version (out of 25mm from memory). then got them anodised blue and used some blue silicon tube to give them a soft feel , came out rather nice but i wouldn't try it again now. there's some pics on a thread somewhere here.

New Year's Resolution, finish some shit up.

We had an open house at AS220 Labs in Providence last night. I took my front panel and started working on the wiring. Every Tuesday is Open Hack night, I'm going to devote them to synth work.

Not quite half of the panel is finished, I got to spend a lot of time talking about synths with people while soldering.

I normally say thanks for dropping in, but not for off-topic spamming... I don't know if you're just trying to boost your postcount or what, but please keep your rants out of my build thread.

Thanks.

edit: mod removed the offending posts, rendering this one somewhat schizophrenic in tone... Smile

Turns out I know this guy. He just forgot to tell me beforehand Smile

It's still a random conversation, but one I'd have been willing to engage with had I known it wasn't from an internet cafe in Shanghai...
