Allen Strange... |

Apparently I have at least once in my life been amazingly lucky...Well aside from meeting my wife
Back in college I bought not one, but two copies of Electronic Music by Allen Strange. One of the first edition, and one of the second. Just picked them up at the library "we're getting rid of this stuff" sale at different times...
I have had my interest in modulars for a very long time, but having really lit a fire under it lately I dug them out and was reading them (originally I only skimmed it so I can't call it re-reading, really). But just this evening I ran across some discussion of how the second edition was selling for hundreds on Amazon...holy cow!
If I *hadn't* just ignited my interest in earnest, I'd be all about putting these boys on EBay, but as it is, I plan to hold on to the second edition, and I'm not sure how desirable the first ed. is.... |

No way! The reddish book with the scaly design on the cover? I have that.

Holy shit!
My copy is in good condition. $900? This was a required book for my degree in audio tech! It wouldn't have cost me more than $30-$50 when I bought it new.
I'm wondering if people are actually considering it worth this price and buying it. I love this book and I'd have to be pretty much on the edge of death by starvation to sell it. _________________ There's an invisible radio gnome playing a gong from a flying teapot - don't miss out! |

I better put my copy in a book protector and open it in a clean room from now on. _________________ There's an invisible radio gnome playing a gong from a flying teapot - don't miss out! |

I spent some time with Alan Strange at UCSD and stayed at his house a few days back in the summer of '72. I was giving him material for the second edition of his book, and we talked a lot about sequential permutations and the EML 400/401 sequencer.
I was impressed with his honesty, good character, hospitality, and musicianship. I could myself fortunate to have known him. |

I bought a copy of the 2nd edition at a used book store in the early '90s for like $7 or $8. I never really read it, except in bits and pieces over the years.
Sold it a couple years ago for somewhere north of $200. Figured someone would get better use out of it than me...and I'd get better use out of the dosh _________________ Looking for a certain ratio since 1978 |
