Yesterday I was looking through bins of stuff I got from the collection of an old many who died this Spring and I stumbled upon an SN76477N. It's a wide one from what looks like the 22nd week of 1980 (8022A).

I see this is a fun IC to own and that Thomas Henry has made good use of it.

QUESTON?

It's sitting in a little chunk of black foam as if it's never been used before and I'd love to try it out.
What the simplest test I can do to make sure it's not dead?
AND what should I not do as to not kill it when experimenting with it?

I've done all kinds of things to 555s (I'm very new to this and making square waves and PWM with 555s is about as far as I've gotten) and never killed one but I'm guessing an SN76477N isn't as forgiving plus it's not easy to come buy.

This is a multifunction IC, so it is possible that if it's damaged most of it could still work. As such, I'd want to test all of it's functions. The best way (IMO) is to find one of the projects that have been published over the years and build it on solderless breadboard.

Get and read the datasheet. There may be simple circuits inside it and there will be cautions about what never to do to it.

Of the things never to do: Don't power it backwards. Don't use more voltage than is stated in the datasheet. Don't apply power to an output pin.

Again, the best way to see if it works is to build up a simple published circuit - I would do this on solderless breadboard if you have one. This IC is complex, so it's not something that you can test with a DMM like you can a diode or transistor.
