I have Thomas Henry's electronic drum cookbook and have had great fun building and modifying the designs in it. However, one circuit I've never gotten to function is the Ripple Counter which involves a 4024 and 4001.

In my latest attempt, I have powered both the 4024 and the 4001 with +15 V and constructed the circuit as pictured in the cookbook, except that I have left out the 741 because I am trying to make this circuit just on +15V DC.

Also to note, I have gotten the 4024s in bulk from China through Ebay, and maybe there is a chance they do not work properly.

Anyway, I have found some anomalies with an oscilloscope:

-The reset pin on the 4024 never goes high. The output from the 4001 that it is connected to never goes high.
-The clock on the 4024 never sends out pulses. Actually, on ONE of the 4024s I tried it did, but in an identical setup, after replacing the 4024 several times with other copies of the same chip, Pin 1, the clock, would not send out pulses


I have tested the 4001 on other circuits and it works correctly. I have made other circuits that use the "flip flop" pattern that this ripple counter uses. But I am not familiar with the 4024 and I don't really know how to make another circuit with it to test if it works.

Does anyone have any advice in regards to how to make this ripple counter work? Thanks!

-- could someone post/direct me to a simple 4024 circuit that involves a low part count so that I could test my 4024 chips to see if they're working right?

here is a simple schematic for the CD4024.
Feed the 4024 input with an Logic level Square wave. Simple Hex Osc will do the trick.
If you are not sure about digital circuits check out this link.

The 4040 chip is explained in the above link and works on the same principle as 4024, just less division outputs. The LED's will let you see what is going on. you can also listen to the output square wave as well.

Also here is the datasheet for the CD4024. The intro tells you how the chip functions.
