I’ve decided to release here on electro-music.com a few more MP3 versions of old recordings of mine.

First up:

“Purple Kick / 2 Hours 59 Minutes”

Notes:

Two tracks recorded separately some years apart, but the latter track, Purple Kick, seemed to fit nicely as an intro for 2 Hours 59 Minutes…

Purple Kick:
Recorded on tape circa 1997
Instrument: Fender Stratocaster guitar with Lace pickups
FX: custom modified distortion, Yamaha DSP-1 Sound Field Processor (for reverb), 10 band EQ

2 Hours 59 Minutes:
Recorded on tape circa 1983
First track recorded on my 4 track Tascom 244 cassette recorder.
Instruments: Radio Shack short wave radio tuned to station WWV for atomic clock time announcement, Fender Mustang guitar with Lawrence humbucking pickups, Roland Drumatix TR-606 drum machine, SCI Prophet 5 synth (for bass)
FX: For guitar; Paia Infinity Sustain into a 120W Kustom guitar amp with some Paia Phlanger treatment. For drums; some Boss Phaser stomp box treatment, 10 band EQ

Thanks Jan. Yeah, even though it was a very long time ago, I never forgot her name… or the pretty purple ribbons in her hair… Cool Wink

“No Fear of God”

The only track that I’ve recorded so far that has my voice (sampled into a Roland SDE-3000 Digital Delay loop with some manual delay time manipulation).

Final mix recorded on tape circa 1997
Instruments: Fender Mustang guitar with Lawrence humbucking pickups, Roland Drumatix TR-606 drum machine, SCI Prophet 5 synth (for poly lead), Radio Shack Concertmate MG-1 synth (for bass)

FX: For guitar; Paia Infinity Sustain into a 120W Kustom guitar amp with reverse echo treatment via Roland SDE-3000 Digital Delay and Tascom 244 tape reversal. For drums; 10 band EQ

For overall reverb, a Koss 4DS Digital Delay System (for quadraphonic reverb) and possibly the Yamaha DSP-1 Sound Field Processor on the final mix.

And now I would like to post some of my ancient “digital age” tracks. These were produced using computer software MIDI sequencers (including various algorithmic sequencers) for note generation for the first time, and using a digital Yamaha SY77 synth.

All of the following tracks were recorded directly, in one take, from a stereo mix of the instruments and any FX that were used.

First up:

“Sequence #1”

The first music that I produced using (only) the Yamaha SY77, programming all notes into the onboard sequencer and custom patching my own AFM voices.

Sequencer programming circa 1990.

FX: Yamaha DSP-1 Digital Sound Field Processor for reverb.

“Cool Breeze”

Instruments: Yamaha SY77 with Drum Sample wave expansion cards installed for all percussion, the AFM bass synth, marimba and xylophone; SCI Prophet 5 synth for the analog synth lead.

Most of the notes generated for the instruments in this track (including random probability of occurrence, duration, and velocity) were produced by my user controlled parameter settings of the MS-DOS algorithmic MIDI program Sound Globs. The various generated MIDI parts were then imported into a computer MIDI sequencer for final editing.

Final computer MIDI sequence programmed circa 1992.

FX: Yamaha DSP-1 Digital Sound Field Processor for reverb.

“The Boulevard Club”

Instrument: Yamaha SY77 with Drum Sample wave expansion cards installed, using some presets (grand piano, solo trumpet) and some of my custom programmed AFM patches.

All note and some composition generated by using my user controlled parameters of the computer MIDI program Jammer Pro (by SoundTrek). The various generated MIDI parts were then imported into a computer MIDI sequencer for final editing circa the year 2000.

FX: Yamaha DSP-1 Digital Sound Field Processor for reverb.

Tascam 4 Track for the win

I used to do tons of 4 track cassette recordings from 1992 - 1998

It really was a blast to get that four track and finally be able to do some multi-tracking!

I started to notice that the cassette tapes that I had recorded the stereo mix from the four track were beginning to show signs of a little wear from being played so much. I made sure to get a decent sound card (Creative Soundblaster) in the next computer I got so that I could make a CD quality digital recording of them. I’m glad that I did…
