Inexpensive and Compact Sequencer (Idea) |
|
|
Hello Folks!
Last week i was introduced to the Korg Monotron Series and a few hours later i had to order one for myself. These things are awesome and even the pricing is great.
Now i need a sequencer, i could not find one on the Internet that i thought would be interesting so i started tinkering.
Since i tend to overengineere stuff, behold this monstrosity:
The big knobs are the pots, the green and red things are leds and the blue circle is a RGB led. And the black thingies are the push buttons.
It can be used as a 1x16, 2x8 or a 1x8 with the channels linked.
One Pot for the coarse and one pot for the fine trim.
The top and bottom row of pots each has its own output.
The CV is purely analog but the control is digital.
All leds are dimable though the use of a ws2803 LED driver.
And a bit of the PCB, at the moment it is just in the "will it all fit on a PCB" stage, two channels routed for good measure.
That is just the userinterface, everything mounted on one PCB.
The PCB is 160mm by 100mm in size.
There are no special cips or parts on there.
The Pots are cheap Alps, it has generic pushbuttons and nice big LEDs.
Dont ask me what the buttons will do, they are just there for the moment.
The whole thing will be controlled by a Atmel AVR (to some known as a arduino).
What do you think?
Greetings,
Peter

Nice The PCB´s size will make it easily fit into standard project boxes. Powerful standalone sequencer! Would be interested to add this to the backlog |

It looks nice. I'm designing a midi/cv sequencer on Arduino too with 3 rows of 8.
I would use only one row of pots for note. And would use one of the buttons for octave up or down for each step individually. And a cuantizer for the notes would be cool too, all in one. |

Thanks for the reply!
The thing about the project boxes, yes, that is the idea
But you have to bear in mind that you need another board to control this one. On its own it cant do much.
I dont Know yet what the will buttons do, since the most complicated/time consuming part in the build will be the userinterface that is all that i am currently working on.
There a bunch of ideas what the buttons will do in the future but they are way, way on the backburner.
The Idea is for now to just have a bunch of buttons, pots and LEDs that can be controlled to do something
Each of the 8 pot rows is controlled by a 8:1 matrix, so you can get two different voltages from the board at a time.
Or if you want to use the values for Midi purposes you could read each pot value with the microcontroller.
This is synth stuff absolutely new to me, this is my first attempt at building something synth or even music related
Still working on the layout a bit, the way i wanted to put the connectors on will not work. There will be a few tideous layout changes that eat up a few hours work and in the end it will look almost the same...
Greetings,
Peter |

If you don't know much about synths or sequencers you should check some, doepfer dark time, doepfer maq 16/3, korg sq10, arp sequencer... So you have some ideas and do something musical and practical |
