hello dear forum friends,

i finally upgraded to a modern computer (2011 MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz Quad Core i7 running OS X 10.8.5) and i have a few questions regarding the setup for getting the old Nord Modular Editor functioning.

first, i plan to get a copy of Windows. any recommendations? XP, Vista, or 7? i am a lifelong mac user, so i don't know much about the differences between Windows OS. i see a lot of people running XP and i have a friend with a copy i can use, so i might just go with that.

second, is partitioning necessary? i was wondering if i can just keep Windows on a separate hard drive or USB Flash drive and use a virtual machine like VMware Fusion or VirtualBox to run the editor.

lastly, i've read that many people have independant USB/MIDI interfaces (one for the editor In/Out and one for MIDI/Synch In/Out). i have an old Midiman (i know, right?!) 4x4 interface, so i've got enough ports to handle all the connections.

my question is: will it be a problem for the Nord Modular Editor (running on the virtual machine) to address my MIDI interface at the same time that Ableton Live is addressing other ports for MIDI and Sync functions?

i imagine it wouldn't be, but i haven't read anyone's account of handling the four MIDI ports on the same interface addressing the software on OS X and a virtual machine simultaneously. if anybody out there has done this, i'd love to know what your experience has been.

thanks as always for the support, i love this forum!

Apologies that you haven't received a reply - Xmas and all.

Go with that - unless you plan to use other Windows software in which case i'd recommend Windows 7.

Not sure about "necessary". I do know that VMware Fusion can use a Bootcamp partition as a source. This is handy if you want a Windows partition to play games on for example as they will work better in Bootcamp than via Fusion and you can boot into the same partition for the Nord Editors.

That said I just have a 4gb Fusion file with XP, the editors and Vaz Modular and it is easy to backup and transfer to other computers if need be.

With my setup I have 2 x UM-Ones and Fusion asks whether I should associate the device with Windows or Mac. I have one connected to the editor in Fusion and the other connected to Numerology in OSX. From this I would assume that Fusion does not like to share devices - not sure if it is possible with other virtualisations? Another thing that lead me to this conclusion is that I had an M-Audio Midiman 4x4 once and I sold it because it would not allow me to address the Nord Editor and Ableton Live at the same time on the same OS.

As with anything to do with the NM1 and MIDI - you may need to research and experiment to find a working system and then stick to it! Wink

Good luck!
