Hi all. I'm looking for scans of the 1980s issues of Electronics & Music Maker project magazine articles about the Spectrum Synthesiser. The Spectrum was a DIY-build cover project for the first issue, designed by myself, the magazine's Technical Editor.

I have the Special Edition, but would like the original serial articles.

Any pointers?

Thanks.

Chris Jordan

Hi Chris,

I have a complete collection of E&MM, so should be able to sort out some good quality scans for you. I am also part way through building a Spectrum, so your designs still have a life today as well.

I have a significant collection of all of the magazines from this era. One of these day's I want to build a website to share key articles from these magazines, if I can ever navigate through the copyright issues involved.

Luckily, one of my Synth DIY friends spotted you message here and gave me a shout on FB (Thanks Rob).

Regards

Magman

I have tried to find an opportunity to visit the British Library in London (no luck so far) to trawl back through electronics mags from the 1970s & 1980s, in particular to find a flanger project published in Practical Electronics, designed I think by Tim Orr. It used the now very difficult to find SAD 1024 BBD, and had some interesting modulating circuitry. Does this ring any bells?

Hi Stephen,

I have attached a list that I've been working on of Electro Music related articles from UK based magazines that should help. I haven't updated this much for over a year, but it is quite complete for Practical Electronics and ETI.

And To Chris,

It would appear that I have already scanned the Spectrum articles. If you PM me your email address, I'll send them across to you (they are too large to send via PM itself).

Regards

Magman

Magman, Many thanks for your amazing list. I think the PE article may be the two part Guitar Sound Processor in Jan/Feb 1979 by M. A. Sawicki and A. Kowalewski, and not Tim Orr - memory does play tricks!

Hi Stephen,

I just checked and that article does use an SAD1024 and I've updated my list to show the key component used.

If you like, I can sort out some scans of these articles in the next few days. Just drop me a PM with your email address and I'll add it to the scan stack (I've got someone wanting some scans of some Sound on Sound magazines already).

Regards

Magman

Thanks. Have done.

Could that have been my design of a phaser using SAD 1024's, published Practical Electronics publication of 1980? Though I do not see this in Magman's project list.

That's nice to hear! Smile

If you take any notes and/or photos of the construction process, I'd be really interested to see them. Also if you're using the Maplin front panel, it would be nice to have that captured in a scan.

PPS I found a couple of demo recordings:
