Here are schematics for my MirrorCore VCO, and UltraFlop-08 sequencer. I just posted them at Muff's, so I thought I'd put them up here as well in case anyone wanted to give them a try. PCBs are typically available through Synthcube for these, or you could do your own.

Anyway:

MCVCO:

This is our take on the internals of the VCO in the CD4046 chip. You can find the schematic for the VCO of the 4046 in the application notes on TI's site among other places. http://www.ti.com/lit/an/scha002a/scha002a.pdf We made some changes such as swapping the FETs for bipolar transistors (to increase tracking linearity a bit). You'll also see some familiar circuits, such as the sine shaper. (the dual transistor type seen on many Thomas Henry VCOs among others) A very cool writeup for sine shapers is on Tim Stinchcombe's site. I hope he doesn't mind me posting a link here: http://www.timstinchcombe.co.uk/synth/tri_sine/tri_sine.html

My original thread at Muff's is here: http://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/post-951739.html#951739

UltraFlop-08

This is a sequencer that started out as a simple externally clocked sequencer that can count up, down, and pingpong. It's evolved a bit since the original version to include individual gate outputs at half step length, internal clock, and a few other smaller improvements. It's based around flip flops (as the name implies) a counter, bin to dec, and a multiplexer (more or less). The internal clock can be easily omitted if desired. This sequencer can be clocked into audio range, and can function as a waveshaper of sorts at those speeds.

im actually in the middle of building a turing machine, klee, the Voice of Saturn (by Synthrotek) and the 16 step by MFOS as well as a modded Baby10 a friend suggested in an attempt to learn about sequencers --how they work & hopefully how to design one (I learn best by application Ive found).

Ill try this as well and PM you with the result, or post here with a question.
I hope you'll have time to answer if I do-ill understand if not.

thank you, sincerely, for both posting the schema and for taking the time to do so here.

if you are in sequencers now you could take a llok at my voltage controlled pattern sequencer (ADC sequencer) as well:

@J3RK
i've seen your work before, nevertheless, i cannot stop to say how awesome you approach on the VCO is. re-building an IC on discrete basis and with CMOS is very cool.

Thanks Mattias!

I had a little help with it, but it was a lot of fun! My cousin is actually a designer of broadcast electronics, and does this sort of thing as a hobby as well, so we collaborated a bit. He figured out that using the bipolar transistors would make tracking linearity better than the FETs used in the 4046, among a few other parts. I borrowed the exponential circuit from the real TH 4046 VCO more or less too.

I'm a big fan of the CMOS 4000 chips. I've been experimenting a bit creating some of the functions using discrete parts lately too, though it's not really practical for keeping board sizes down. Very Happy The flip flop and mono-stable on my LowFO LFO (used to start and stop the core,) was all done with NPNs, and it's 2" x 3" alone. Very Happy Was good for learning though, and it actually work quite well. I'll probably post the schematics for that one too soon.

haha. i know what you mean. each time i have more than one CMOS on a board i consider a 4-layer board - so far i never had to go to these extremes, though.

Hi @J3RK, the link to the schematics of the Complex VCO seems dead, also to the Documantation Link you posted on muffwiggler.

btw. is there a big difference between this vco and your newer Stroh Ultrafade VCO?? Except that the MCVCO has 2 VCO/VCA with XOR ..
