a CPU fan, a HDD magnet and a PWM controller circuit from here (with some different values).
The fan is mounted on a thin piece of wood, slightly smaller then the box, which is attached using some double sided adhesive foamtape to reduce
vibrations. I tried to get everything centered but it was pretty hard to get the magnet right because of it's shape. It's not too bad though, it doesn't
'walk away' and at low speeds it works great. I riveted some clear plastic to the top of the box as protection.

As long as I don't turn up the speed very high it doesn't make much noise.
And the noise is coming from the stirbar, which is a decapitated nail right now, grinding on the glass.
I don't really have a good mic to record it but I was thinking that if I add a reed switch I should be able
to use it as an oscillator Wink

Very nice!

This would look good with some fluorescein in the water and some UV LEDs (nice green glow). Fluorescein is available as a drain water tracing dye e.g. in the UK:

I'm unable to source the Smurfs project box though Laughing .

I was thinking of having some fun with colored dyes (I have water and oil based). Fluorescein might be fun although I'm not sure if I can get that,
I do have some UV reactive paint though,. so I could try that. Hmm maybe I have some glowsticks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezWHPJPfo54 Shocked Laughing

You can get bioluminesent algae that glows when the water moves. No led's required and the glow will last for a long time (glow sticks only last for a few hours).

True and it's a 'greener' alternative (as long as you don't resort to grow lights) but you can wear them out and they stop glowing (albeit temporarily). Your right about the glow sticks - once the chemicals are exhausted they stop glowing.

Don't know what the algae rights people will think about it Very Happy .

I think I've actually seen that as a kid, didn't know it was algae though.

I could always use bioluminescent bacteria instead, do bacteria have rights ? they probably do,. right ?

Magnetic oscillator sounds like a cool idea! A stiroscillator!
