Hello! I've recently acquired (for free) a useful quantity of nice 30 gauge wire. A few hundred feet. Lots of colors.

Since I'm about to wire up 16 front panels, I'm wondering if there's a down side to using such a small gauge wire.

Thanks.

The thinner any wire, then the higher it's electrical resistance will be for a given length.
Thin wire is fine for low current circuits but there will be a small voltage drop across which will get bigger as the current increases. So I wouldn't use it for power wires but it should be fine for everything else unless screened cables are called for.

Hope this helps.

Andy

I will add a practical example: a long while back I made a couple of wiring harnesses out of cheap MIDI cables chopped up. I liked them because the cables were nice and supple and already had 5 conductors (15V, Gnd, -15V, Gnd, 5V).

Recently I found that with a dual VCO module that pulled a significant amount of current there was enough resistance in the harness to make the power supply wobble. Was actually quite relieved that it wasn't a fault in the module itself, but it was still a bit distressing to have to scrap two harnesses.

No more teensy wires for power Smile
