Saw this post on Matrixsynth and was astounded at how beautiful this album is.

I missed it all these years but am happy to have heard it now. Smile

You have anything to share that is obscure?

I'm easy, anything goes.

Goodbye Blue Sky by Godley & Creme.

This is one of my desert island albums.
It's not e-m but it's strange and beautiful. Very. On both counts.

On the surface it's the experimental art-school half of 10cc doing an album about the end of the world, kind of.

But the accompaniment is what makes this album startlingly unique.

First, there is a two-man team of harmonica virtuosos.
Second, there is a gospel-quality male chorus.

WTF? Precisely.

What one might think would make for a distractingly strange sonic combination, instead creates a new kind of music.

And the songs are gems. All of them are enjoyable and some are pure magic.

I've had the LP for years and managed to find a CD before rarity drove the price through the roof. I won't part with either of them. Good luck finding one.

This is the kind of top notch music you used to find on Passport Records.
Remember Passport Records?
Sigh.

Islets in pink polypropylene - Anthony Manning

https://archive.org/details/ird054

Apparently he did all this using only a Roland R8 drum machine, in 1994.

Details here: http://www.germstore.com/islets_in_pink_polypropylene.php

A Psychedelic Guide to Monsterism Island

http://open.spotify.com/album/2fgWrvEQ1CgiRHIsLqKlGL

Found this album while searching for random stuff by Gruff Rhys on Spotify - it's a kind of compilation or soundtrack made by various artists, somehow related to Pete Fowler's Monsterism work.

Adding the spotify link here even though I suspect most don't use Spotify - maybe you can find it elsewhere. Unfortunately it isn't on youtube in its entirety, you can find a couple of tracks there but the kick I get out of this album is the whole feel with sporadic narration by a booming cartoonish voice, and evocative titles to the tracks. Also, knowing previous work by Fowler (mainly covers to Super Furry Animals albums) I keep seeing these weird cartoon creatures in my head while listening.

It's a very cute album. I think, if you're familiar with stuff I've done, it won't come as a surprise that I love this.

Thanks both of you, I will try and see if I can find some tracks. Smile

I guess one thing about obscure stuff is that it is harder to find. Well, obviously...

this, combined with the coverart and title makes me think I'll probably like it.

And for some reason it made me think of Neil's Heavy Concept Album, don't know if it's a pearl, although I personally think it's brilliant.

I hadn't realized that the first "Sounds of Monsterism Island" album seems to be in its entirety on youtube. It's a compilation of nice old stuff, some of which I've heard mentioned here on the forum!

Excellent! I love exploring new music these days, and some good starters on the tube sends you off to more wonderful discoveries Smile

My turn then. Two of Rupert Hine's early records which are quite different from the stuff he made later: "Pick Up a Bone" and "Unfinished Picture" from the early 70s.

Unfinished Picture
Pick Up a Bone

Not very EM I'm afraid, but lesser known pearls nonetheless IMHO...

Two great pieces of synth-pop with an experimental edge and a nice portion of humour were the first 2 albums by The Gadgets...

two songs from the second album:

I don't buy many CDs these days, but have just ordered a copy of this on one.

Oh... and was anybody else ever into the Windham Hill label?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windham_Hill_Records

I never really followed any of the individual artists, but have just been listening to the various samplers I picked up in the early '90s - some real gems in there that I'd forgotten.
