WSG My build log discussion. Subject description: and I know I'll screw it up at some point |
|
|
So I ordered my WSG and while I'm waiting for its arrival I've been thinking about how to house it. I'm fairly confident I have the skills to construct the WSG and its housing, but I have to admit I know nothing about the nature of electronics.
So I just came into possession of a bunch of old slide cases, the kind that hold the old color slides. Basically its a small metal suitcase, the perfect size for a WSG. But its not aluminum, I think its actually made out of steel, magnets stick to them.
MY QUESTION IS THIS: Can I use an all metal case like this to house electronics or will it be too conductive and futz up all the stuff?
Thanks for any help, I do appreciate you guys taking the time to help noobs. I have additional questions but this one is foremost on my mind at the moment. Last edited by zerolous on Wed Aug 20, 2014 7:41 am; edited 1 time in total |

Here is one of the boxes. I've started ripping out the slide slots. Thankfully they don't seem to be warping the bottom and pull out surprisingly easy, though very messily.
What I would like to do, if it all fits, is center a speaker right in the middle then put one oscillator section on each side with the low pass filters across the bottom. I'll mock up a layout soon and post that as well. Guess I'll turn this into a build blog thread.

It should be doable; you want to make sure you don't have the PCB touching any metal surfaces other than perhaps on standoffs (which could be metal, as long as they don't short to anything on the PCB.
I would question whether you'll have room for a speaker and the PCB though, depth wise. Even with 1/4" standoffs on the bottom, there are components that will stand another 1/2" above the PCB, so you're looking at 13/16" or so from the bottom just to house the PCB. I have a similar slide box that I want to do something similar with, and I don't think it's more than 1 1/4" deep, so that leaves you very little space for a speaker.
Additionally, you'll need a small amp to drive a speaker, you won't be able to hook it directly to the WSG. |

Of course! ThePCB! In my mind I was splitting the pots off to the sides so the speaker would have space but I forgot about the PCB. Oh well, the speaker idea was iffy at best but I thought I'd at least consider it. I'm still not convinced there is enough depth to do this as a inside build, I want to be able to close the lid on it. I'll see once the parts get here, I may just revert back to my original design idea once I see it all in person.
Thanks for the tip though, I'll be sure to watch my placement. |

Not a bad idea
If you troll around you'll see my WSG built into a weird shaped surround speaker, so it had the speaker already built in. I made the circuit on protoboard, so I was able to shoe horn it in.... |

The big issue with the wsg is how many controls you can have on it. Mine has 14 pots, switches, leds and a line out jack, I doubt you'd fit that on a 1U front rack panel. I put mine in one of those clear plastic photo cubes. I'll get a pic up asap. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

My original idea was to do a build using two speakers, one out in the open and another built into an interior chamber, possibly utilizing a pan or bottle to give the sound a really eerie muffled vibe. The idea would be to add a layer of depth and distance and vibration to the piece to accent the main up front speaker. I kind of see it as a standalone noise making thing as opposed to being part of a larger kit. Does that sound like it might be interesting? |

That sounds pretty wild. I would love to see it. |

Well my littlest helper wanted a project so I decided to do this first build in a wood cigar box I had from when I was building cigar box guitars. He's quite good at drilling holes with the manual drill if I hold the top, not bad for four.
Checked the pot knobs and they don't hide the art at all, which is nice.
Oh, and that's just a mock up version of the art for placement.

Here's the front and back of the final design. I did have to redesign because of the PCB (thanks for the heads up!). Ran out of wire because half the pots are so far away. Always something.

Finally back to work on WSG. I've got most of the wires in. Ended up running out of wire with 4to go. |
