4089 Rhythm Generator Subject description: with reset/sync |
|
|
A rhythm generator using the CD4089, very similar to the one I used for the bandersnatch except this time I'm using the clear input as a reset.
For this to work the D input needs to be low when the Clear is made high. So I used an AND gate (made up of U2a + U2b) to
be able to make the D input low. Because this has to happen when the Clear input is high there is an extra inverter (U2c) on
the input of this AND gate. The reset signal is turned into a very narrow pulse and used as a sync input. The Clock needs to
be inverted (since the CD4089 triggers on a high to low transistion) so I used a transistor for that.
The 3 position (toggle) switches make it possible to select between a high, low, or external signal for the ABCD control inputs.

PHOBoS have you tried running an audio rate clock through this. The 4089 makes a good melody generator if you sequence the ABCD inputs with a pattern generator. |

Excellent! I was just thinking of building pretty much exactly this. I dont have to do the breadboarding now! THANKSSSSS! |

good to hear it's useful
You can get some longer sequences out of it by connecting the control inputs to a counter like a 4040. Even more fun if
you use an output of the 4089 to clock that. Of course you could use any digital signals and I often use a LFSR to have
some (semi-)random variations when I use it for drums. _________________ "My perf, it's full of holes!"

I turned it into a PCB
Im developing a surface mount lunetta modular format where the modules are horizontal as that seems to suit my designs best. They will latch straight onto power rails, maybe with magnets. Here we are looking at the back of a panel.
bolts and switches go through the larger pads. It should be very flat, I might build it into the shell of an old macbook
At the larger blue 'O' a pin on the 4089 needs to be bodged to ground. |

Great circuit.
Will have to buy some CD4089s and build some up! |
