I don´t know about you guys, but personally I am getting completely fed up by downloading mp3 files.. and then there is no info tags that tells me who the artist is or where he hangs out .. email addies?
Most of the mp3s will end up in iTunes and then on the iPod. Files with no info are very annoying. No info tags also means that the search and filtering in apps like iTunes don´t really work that well. Untagged files eventually ends in the trash. I often listen to a file right then .. and later I want to listen to it on the iPod. No info.. no tags.. where is that file? I can just listen to the lot of untagged files .. well.. I just counted 2648 untagged files in iTunes.

I am completely with you on this one. Untagged files get one listen, and go straight to /dev/null. From a public relations perspective, no matter how good the music is, the composer seems amateur if the files don't get tagged properly.

Winamp users can do that with Winamp. Of course all serious musicians use Mac. Twisted Evil

But anyway, I'd be very happy too, if all of you people posting your music here added at least the name of the track and the artist in the tag.

I dunno. I want to tag them, I realy do, but it always takes a long time. It´s quite easy untill the "genre" field. That one always makes me sit down with some coffee and contemplate the deeper meanings of life.

I demand a "what-does-this-button-do-again?-core" option.

I use Audacity to convert and the tag editor is built in. Pops open a window to edit the tags when you do a saveas operation.

Lately, I've been converting mp3s to wav files so I can burn CDs to play in my car. Shocked

Ihad a look at my own mp3's and most ended up untagged, I knew I tended to forget about that but didn't know it was that bad ...

Anyone know about a free bulk tag writer for windows, preferably recursive over sub-dirs ?

Aternatively I'll make one myself I guess with info found in the first few links in http://www.google.nl/search?num=100&hl=en&newwindow=1&safe=off&q=delphi+mp3+read+write&btnG=Search

What is Delphi? Is it a programming environment, a language?

Remember Turbo Pascal ? The windows version is called Delphi and a bit of luxury was added of course, over the decades :-)

No bells ? then it's a sort of a visual basic like environment, except that's it's pleasant to work with for me.

Thanks. Sounds good for Windows. I could use an application that would let me manage the tags in batch processes. When will you have it, Jan?

Jan, unless you enjoy it and have the time I wouldn´t make this myself because I think these exist already. I don´t need them since I have only a few mp3´s that I keep in sorted dirs but I often saw these when looking of freeware music toys. I think many directories of freeware windows stuff have tag editors. Often so many that you can´t see the convolution/buffer manipulations/freaked weirdness for them.

Mosc; Audacity is looking very nice in general. I installed it a while ago and am quite pleased with it. I think it´s one of the only things around that does 64bit floating point too. Not that I need this, but it´s nice to have... A major victory for the freeware corner of the world for sure!

Jan, the folks at Hydrogen Audio created "Foobar2000"... a wonderfully simplistic, yet extremely powerful mp3 player/librarian/tagger/ripper.

Monkey Audio is a more glistening one, but (I'm 99% sure) has a mass tagger as well (and still free).

I use Foobar2000 in windows. It also supports .flac files with embedded .cue sheets, so I can archive a CD in 1 single file, and still be able to re-create it if my original gets trashed, and also be able to scan through and find individual songs. Quirky, but I love it.

Foobar200 seems to be OK, but it'll take some time to get to know it :-)

Ah well I found some manuals, though even that's not been made too easy ... I'll give this some time before (if ever) I start writing my own mass tagger, thanks JK.

Apple´s free iTunes can edit tags too. It doesn´t have various batch tools, but it does the job nicely. It is free for the PC and Mac and soon for Linux too.

Actually, iTunes can edit batches, but it does not have tools for "calculating" tag info or filename info based on rules.

Really, one should add the copyright information to the tag as well. Posting the file on an independently operated website with your copyright info may be very valuable in establishing your copyright in case of legal action. The file will be date stamped on our server, or where ever it is posted, with the appropriate copyright information. Maybe this is not as robust as using the national copyright office or library, but it is much better then nothing.

I also complete tags for files I download if they don't have them, because I am basically a librarian at heart. It does irritate me a bit when people don't include them. Particularly the date. Any music I download from here I just label 'Electronic', to avoid Kassen's shoe-gazing anxieties.

I was browsing through my playlist (which is dominantly music from here) a couple days ago and I was somewhat disgusted. Everytime something caught my ear, I would look to see what it was in iTunes and would only find a vague file name like "vkj3" and no artist/title/etc. Categorization is a necessary part of distribution...I would be cool if there was some protocol to enforce tag labels before uploading, but that does not seem feasible or enforceable.
