This is as a tryout after I read how the saw osc on a Korg poly800 works. I read it was made of 4 squares with octaves 1, 2, 4 and 16 in a certain volume ratio. I did some wave drawing and figured it had to be a volume ratio of 1:2:4:8 respectively for the octaves. In the patch below I made a simple string sound with the 'poly800-osc' versus a saw osc-D (and added a second poly800-osc for fun, it can be switched on and off). I like the much more lively sound of the poly800 osc, both when there is just a touch of detune (like in the patch) as well as with perfectly tuned osc's.

This might have been done before, but I am not aware of it, therefore I just submit the patch here. If more people like it, maybe it could be a building block thing.

Well, played a bit more with it. There is a downside to the osc, namely if I add the fourth (or more) square wave to make the combined saw, one can hear the pitch of the single square osc (instead of the osc blending nicely into the saw with the same pitch as square osc one). In this patch I use just three squares therefore (resulting in a sawtooth with just 8 'square parts'). If anyone has suggestions to make nicer strings out of this, feel welcome to post any variations.

I happily borrowed two of Rob Hordijks patches into this one; a tone control patch (in the VA section) and the string resonator in the fx area.

Three variations; first more natural string-like (not quite there though), 2nd and 3rd more synthi strings with obvious filter sweeps.
