Carlo, it's just that there as so many great Italian composers I just let my imagination run away. I guess next you'll tell me Bela Bartok isn't Italian either. Laughing

At last J. S. Bach is Italian - Joseppi Sabatini Bach that is.

Mustel, that Holst-conducted recording of the Planets sounds manky!! Maybe production is more important to me...?

Manky? Laughing
I really like old recordings. I collect composers either conducting or performing their works. I have Debussy playing piano for a song from "Pelleas" with Mary Garden, the original singer in the role of Melisande. Bartok playing "Contrasts" with Benny Goodman and Josef Szigeti, and Mahler playing the fouth movemnt of his 4th on piano. (piano roll at least). I have some others, but I can't remember them. The Carl Stalling compilations started me on this. I loved the old sound, it had such character. THis opened up the old recodings for me. Handy for jazz. Another interesting item I have is "Ebony Concerto" Stravinsky, performed by Woody Herman Orchestra, for whom it was written. Lovely scratchy, the feel just right.

I'm not the right person to say anything about the link between Sibelius and the Finnish nature. Sure, the Finnish nature is very beautiful at its best, but I don't know if Sibelius sounds like that. Maybe.

Help me out here, salo-t! Smile

Just when I am away from computers and the net, my help is needed. Oh well..

As far as I know, Sibelius was inspired by nature, especially by swans and other migrating birds, but he was quite reluctant to attach any direct connection between his music and nature. This is especially true of his symphonies, which he said to be absolute music. There is certainly an unique sound in his orchestrations, kind of somber, maybe "nordic" sound that seems to evoke images of northen nature in listeners.

He was of course also inspired by the finnish national epic Kalevala and the mythological nature in many of his symphonic poems. For example Tapiola is about Tapio, the ancient forest god.
