Hello all,

is there any reason that we see more designs using THT (through the hole) components to be solder as a DIY kit vs using SMD (surface mounted devices) components already solder?

Does users prefer to solder it than make/buy the same functionality in SMD components (already soldered or as a DIY kit) ?

Cheers

What you actually see is that more and more projects are using SMT.
I think more and more people realise it is actually not that hard to solder SMT.

I myself use both, I tend to use THT components for things like electrolytics and film caps, so signal fidelity. And also tend to use THT for resistors, because I have a lot of them. But bypass caps and actives are a lot smaller, really convenient to use SMT.

More and more parts, the thru-hole version is being discontinued, but the SMD version is still being produced.

The way I see it, we're going to have to get used to SMD at some stage.

Thanks for your comments.

But, I was wondering if there is any reason from the point of view of a user that have preference for equipment using THT (or that they build/solder their DIY) instead of buying a compact SMD version of the same thing. ?

Most people PREFER to work in thru-hole, due to it's large size and easy-to-work-with nature.

SMD has a steep learning curve, compared to thru-hole, but is still learnable and doable at home (as long as you avoid 0402 size.)`

If I design a board I tend to use nothing but smd but at home I use tht.
I even buy little boards to convert from small packages to 0.1" pin distance in order to be able to breadboard these components.
