announcing electro-music 2016 - Call for participation! Subject description: Huguenot, NY |
|
|
The electro-music festival is the world's premiere event for experimental electronic music. Known as the "Woodstock of electronic music," it features three full days of concerts, seminars, demonstrations, workshops, jam sessions, collaborations, video art, and a swap-meet. Electro-music 2016 will be held at the Greenkill Retreat Center in Huguenot, New York, September 9 - 11, 2016. Now in it's twelfth year, we expect this to be the biggest and best electro-music event ever!
The scope of this festival is very broad, covering all aspects of electro-music: experimental electronic music, ambient, space music, circuit bending, computer music, electro-jazz, modular synthesis, musique concrete, improvisation, algorithmic composition, multi-media, visual art and much more. The focus will be on participant involvement, sharing, community development, audience education, and great music.
You can actively participate in electro-music 2016 by performing music or visuals, giving a seminar, workshop, or demonstration, joining one of the many collaborations, or by volunteering to help with various tasks.
If this is your first time, please visit the web site for instructions on how to participate:
http://event.electro-music.com/
The deadline for application is June 30.
This event is a community-sponsored gathering, not a commercial enterprise. As such, everyone who attends will need to purchase tickets, including performing artists and volunteers. We regret that we cannot provide compensation for artists, or pay for travel expenses. We strongly encourage full participation: plan to attend for all three days to support your fellow artists and to contribute to the sense of community. This makes the event more enjoyable for everyone. Highest priority for performance spots will go to artists who are fully involved. Ticket prices are expected to increase slightly from last year, when they ranged from $40 for a single day to $339 for a three-day pass including meals and lodging. _________________ Jez

I sure wish I could attend, I will make it a goal to attend next year. Everyone please take note:
I am calling all friends to participate in the "less Les" campaign. It consists of you making reminders in social media, email, telephone or whatever means you wish.
The reminders are intended to keep me aligned with the weight loss goal. I am now at 500+ pounds and need to lose the weight or deal with fate. I plan to move around and exercise more, work with physical therapy, and focus intently on the eating plan.
Thank you for whatever you can do to help.

now I'm going to do a transfer from the bed to the wheelchair, one of my "activities".

Good luck with the weight loss plan, as someone who has gone through the weight loss thing all I can say is stick with it, it eventually gets easier, persistence will eventually pay off _________________ Jez

It's been eight years since our last EMF. Looking forward to it! We've added two members since then and released two albums. 08 was so much fun. |

Count Me In! |

Of course, Howard and I as Twyndyllyngs will be there. We'll also do a set with Greg Waltzer as Xeroid Entity. Brian Good has asked me to do a collaboration so that's three slots in which I hope to participate. Of course, I am open to other collaborations. Since I will be driving separately, I'll have enough room to bring extra gear so I could join in a ZIM set if that happens. Jez, I'd love to do a set with you as well. I might bring a trombone this year! _________________ Bill Fox------------------|\-------------

That's when I learned that trombones can be amazing! Hope I can make it to this year's event. Would love to hear what you can do with the amazing trombone! https://youtu.be/FNFOaHugGHI |

My first E-M... gosh! |
|
|
Hi, everyone. Finally my kids are old enough so I can travel in September for something other than work! So I will be attending my very first Electro-Music this September and I'm looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones.
I have submitted my application and talked to Greg, so I can give a sneak preview here for anyone who might be curious. In addition to a possible solo set if there's room, I will be playing a duo with Tony Gerber, the return of mind9Spiral... we played a house concert and a planetarium gig here in Colorado years and years ago, and we're looking forward to doing it all again.
But my big news is that I hope to be giving a seminar introducing the new Link technology by Ableton, which allows anyone with Ableton Live on PC or Mac, OR any iOS app that supports Link, to jam together in sync.
This is a brand new technology, announced a couple of months after E-M 2015 and only available since January. It works like a charm, and you do NOT have to be an Ableton Live user to take advantage of it.
In addition to my seminar on the technology and etiquette of Link, I will be hopefully hosting a Link Lounge, where people can come in, hook up, and play together. The room will be open to players and listeners, and I hope to have a revolving group of participants throughout the weekend.
Check https://www.ableton.com/en/link/ to learn more about Link and for a list of the apps that support it... and I look forward to seeing everyone in a few months!

This sound interesting, Mike. Does it use wifi and if so does it depend on the on-site connectivity infrastructure, or is there dedicated hardware, or does it rely on peer-to-peer inter-connectivity? And if its this last thing, does that mean it can be used among devices where there is no centralized data-flow control network attached to the internet? Just wondering out loud.

Hi Steve. Let me get a tiny bit more technical...
Link does in fact use Wi-Fi. It can use ANY Wi-Fi network that the devices making the music are smart enough to see; I am not aware of any tests that have been done to see how much the sync degrades if one uses a network that is also being used by many other people, especially with Internet traffic in the mix.
It's a multicast format; data is shared between all devices on the network that have been told to look for Link data (and indeed between all apps on the same device that use it!). When I demonstrate it at E-M and then set up the Link Lounge, there will be a dedicated Wi-Fi network that I'll bring in with me for the purpose. It will not connect to the Internet and will require a password, so random people won't be able to connect to it trying to get a bigger pipe to download porn.
If you want to participate in a Link session, you just choose that Wi-Fi network, enter the password I give you, and go. As I will explain at the seminar (or as you can see a bit for yourself in Ableton's introductory videos), Link is a very different protocol from anything that has ever been done with sync before. It was designed from music ideas first, NOT technical ideas. There will be people who denigrate its abilities, and that's fine; they don't have to get involved.
One more thing to remember before you participate: all you need is a laptop (Mac OS X or Windows) running Ableton Live 9.6.... OR, an iPhone or iPad with working Wi-Fi running ANY app that has Link built in. There is no such thing as a "Link app" and there is nothing centralized at all. Each app includes Link as part of its feature set and it can be turned on or off as the user desires.
Many of the best Link-friendly apps are cheap, and a couple are even free. The Ableton website has an official list of approved apps, but there are more than those out there... the Audiobus website lists many more, and new versions of existing apps that add Link are popping up every week. Thumbjam just added it, for example, and so did Lorentz... with Laplace and Marsenne to follow, but Cassini is a long ways away, alas.
I am a big advocate of Link, and I'd love to see it coexist with other ways to do sync within other DAWs... but even with what it does now, it makes collaborative music making more fun than it's been in a long, long time. I look forward to talking about it, and hopefully demonstrating it with volunteers in the audience.
