MiniMoog clone |
|
|
I've got plenty of unfinished business, but there's always time to explore new projects.
Recently, I've stumbled over various sites by people who built MiniMoog clones, and I liked very much what I saw. To explore the feasibility of building one myself I would like to research a few options.
On the intertubes I found PCB designs of all boards contained in a MiniMoog, except that of the VCO that I'd use if I ever going to build one -- namely the the "old" VCO using the CA3046. The only VCO layouts I could find use the uA726, and I don't want to use that one (or the discreet one that I don't want to use either).
So I'd like to ask if anyone has got a PCB layout of the "old" VCO (CA3046-version) that could be posted here, or alternatively a picture of the VCO board's back side showing the traces. I'd take it from there.
Thanks, Ralph _________________ Built: MFOS SLMS plus, SL Ultimate & Expander, 10 step seq; SLMS MkII; PAiA FatMan, Mutable-Instruments Shruthi-1; Jasper Wasp Clone

jdesgoulet on muffs is working on a two-PCB Minimoog clone -- I don't have the link handy, though. He's (eventually) going to sell them (not quite yet...) |

Ok, after I've more or less finished making stripboard layouts of all known MiniMoog boards (add here your thoughts), I've finally found an image of a PCB layout of the "old" VCO on Matrixsynth, that I can use as a template for tracing one myself (the assembly guide and all the rest is avaliable at Fantasy Jack's).
For the remaining boards, Crazy Patroche has very nice PCB layouts in the style of the original MiniMoog boards. I'm not so much into self-etching but the PDFs he provides are easily convertable to Gerbers, so that's taken care of.
So now I have the choice of using stripboards (cheaper, much more work) or PCBs (easier to stuff, but much more expensive). Or I can wait, until the board by jdelgoulet over at MuffWiggler is available.
Anyway, if you do a recreation of a vintage synth, do you stay true to the original (as far as reasonable) or do you improve on it, e.g. use 1% resistors everywhere, even if the original uses 5% ones, and so on? I don't suppose using 1/4W resistors instead of the 1/2 W ones listed in the parts list would make any difference, or would it? I also see that none of the op-amps have decoupling capacitors next to the power lines. Would you add them?

I tried to build the original VCOs for my MM clone, but I had a bunch of fake u726, so I gave up and used modified Roland M100 VCOs. They sound great and are just as unstable as the originals

Hi Ralph,
I have a board design for the Minimoog VCF + VCA, all discrete, so if you want any mixing or buffering, you'd need to add that on a separate board (simple enough). I have a board for the latter as well, can be added to the VC+VCA main board.
The thing is though, I have none of the boards left, if you have some time, I can reorder at iTEAD (takes about a month), saves you a lot of time stripboarding, and you can start matching transistors now
This is it ("Look Ma, no IC's!"):

AndyR1960: Wow, I'd be glad if my clone ended up just half as cool (and unstable...) as yours.
LFLab: Thanks, but don't rush and order more PCBs just yet -- not for me anyway. As I've written above, I finally did find a PCB layout, so I don't have to rely on stripboards, anymore. Although, come to think of it, a stripboard MiniMoog has a kind of subversive feel to it...

Keyboard for the mini |
|
|
I'm curious about how to implement a keyboard for the Minimoog clone I'll be making. I'll be building from jdesgoulet's pcb as on Muffs or from the Crowminius project. As they are using Fatar Keybeds for the new mini then my thoughts were to get one of these. But how would these be set up to work with either of these 2 diy pcbs? |

I haven't looked into keyboards yet, but as far as I understand, there's these two options:
a) Keybed has a diode matrix-type encoder built in (the connector has far fewer lines than there are keys). In this case people have built small keyboard scanner boards using a microcontroller and a DAC to output a control voltage (see Tauntek's Minimoog for an example). These are usually salvaged keybeds from a defunct keyboard or midi controller.
b) Keybed has a switch per key. These switches are then connected to a resistor ladder in order to get approptiate control voltages (see original Minimoog schematics for details). I think the Katar keybeds are of this type.
Take with a few grains of salt, because -- as I've said -- I haven't looked into that yet. _________________ Built: MFOS SLMS plus, SL Ultimate & Expander, 10 step seq; SLMS MkII; PAiA FatMan, Mutable-Instruments Shruthi-1; Jasper Wasp Clone

Thanks, great food for thought. I see that the Crominius project already has a Midi converter built into the pcb design so in theory I imagine one can just plug in a Midi board into this. Although there is still the question of how the wheels work as I don't think Crow set up these to be midi controlled. So these would need to be either salvaged wheels housings or if Deopfer still offer them one of theirs. The hard part of the mini will be getting the housing and switches right. Much to do. |

Two weeks ago, I sent two of the smaller boards (power and VCF) to the EasyEDA PCB manufacturing service, and they have just returned. They're looking great!
I made Gerber files based on the PDFs on Crazy Patroche's web site (I got his permission to reproduce them). I modified the design to include 0.156" edge connectors like in the original Minimoog (Patroche uses 0.1" pin headers as connectors). Also, I had to change the lettering on the solder side to use vector fonts.
I'll finish the VCO board now (I don't use Patroche's version), and then send it and all the remaining boards for manufacturing. Hololodioh!! _________________ Built: MFOS SLMS plus, SL Ultimate & Expander, 10 step seq; SLMS MkII; PAiA FatMan, Mutable-Instruments Shruthi-1; Jasper Wasp Clone

In order not to pollute this forum with my inane mumble, I've opened a page at my DIY blog to tell tales of misery and imagination. And Minimoog replicas. It's here: http://inaptlycrafted.blogspot.com/2016/06/minimoog-replica.html .
Nice weekend everyone!
