Confused about dsp & voice allocation |
|
|
I have an expanded rack- 8 DSPs, 32 notes max, right ?
I have a pretty heavy (99%) patch loaded into slot D, and only that slot is activated. Looking at the display, only 8 notes can be played max.
This makes sense-No problem.
Now I also have the exact same patch loaded into slot C. When Slot C is the only slot activated, an 8 is displayed.
No problem.
When I press both slots together, each slot is only allocated 4 voices.
Why?
If each slot is capable of 8 notes, then why can't each slot play 8 notes when both slots are activated?
I've re-read pages 210-214 several times, but I just don't get it.
Hell, there are 8 DSPs in this machine |

If it’s like the G2, the % figure is how much of a whole DSP this patch takes. The voice allocation uses all available dsp so a single slot can run 8 99% voices or two slots will have 4 voices each. If patch load was <=50% then you would have 16 or 2x8 voices ands so on.
Nord modulars, G1 and G2, are not renowned for massive polyphony. |

It's slightly different than the G2- but now I am thinking about the allocation issue in a different light-
I always had it in my head, that each DSP (or 2 DSPs in an expanded NM) were "only used" for any one slot.
In reality, all DSP resources can be used by 1 or ALL slots, at any time.
Would someone comment on this- so I know if I'v e finally got it right or not?? |

That's right, patches use whatever DSP is available. Nothing is reserved for a particular slot...the main processor in the G2 (and in the G1) will calculate how much of resources a particular patch needs, and tries to allocate all requested voices for all slots. It does this by shuffling patches to the 4 different DSPs. But if you request too much DSP resource, then it has to make compromises about how many voices you are allowed.
The NM1 manual has a very good explanation with diagrams about how this works. |
