My dream is becoming reality.

I decided to open this thread to ask questions and solicite advice.

I would firs off like to thank all of you that have made this an obtainable dream for a man with my limited education. With special thanks to

Grumble
PhoBos
And elmigel

Everything I have so far is built on perf. I will give a quick overview of where it's at so far.

Lower rack

Midi to cv. ( built from a cluster of schematics, analog is Ray Willson)
VCO1. (Thomas Henrey, built with tl071s so I could get in and experiment)
Divider mixer ( based loosely on valve wizard sub octave)
4017 8 channel 2 line sequencer
4 Chanel mixer and patch bay
E.G. VCA Basic LFO combo
E.G. VCA combo
Basic drum sound module. (Closer to metronome sounds for practice)
Low pass VCF and pink noise

Second rack is to be an independent but complementary improvement rack.

VCO1 triangle core only ( I intend to use it mostly to drive first VCO)
4 Chanel 1 line sequencer ( syncable compliment to 8 Chanel)
Divider. More advanced than first
6 channel mixer ( realized 4 channels on first one weren't enough)
Dual VCA (13700 based. Pretty close to application sheet)

Now the questions can begin.

I'm looking for different ADSR recommendations. I will be building it dual in the one wide blank I have in the top rack. My first two EGs are 555 AR types.

I want high quality with these ADSRs so I can leave the ARs as utility spares.

Any suggestions of schematics or dual ADSR kits are welcome.

I am on 15v+-

BTW, two more things

1) Your rig looks awesome, good job!

2) The schematics vault is a great resource when looking for circuit ideas

100m ADSRs are highly recommended, love them.
For slow envelopes, the Thomas Henry CMOS ADSRs.

Quick question???

In the Thomas Henrey ADSR recommended above, there is an extra connection at the trigger and gate input.

Are these connections that break when something is plugged in the jack?

If so, what are these type of jacks called? I have 1 from an organ headphone jack, but am not sure what to call it to order anouther.

Yes that is exactly what that means.

Normally it's called a switched jack. 1/4" jacks would be like a Switchcraft 112AX

They're also sometimes called normalized connections.

So I love building modules, but was really wondering how my modules compair to others, so I cheated and purchased a few.

Im actually even more happy with my perf board home built after the true test comparison. However it was nice to add all the virsitility of the top rack all at once.

You... spent money on a finished module?

Stingy bugger that I am, the most I'll do is buy a full kit.

That just looks awesome!
Could you post a picture taken from the front so we can have a peek to what your synth looks like now?

Hi guys

Yes I did AlanP. However I did find half of them very reasonable on eBay second hand. So that made doing a purchased rack of modules within my grasp.

Purchased the rest from lower west side (flareless on here) and synthesizers.com.

Actually turned out that if you purchas a blank 5u panel, purchas that style of knobs, and purchas a good ADSR board kit. At 95$ American the synthesizers.com ADSR is about 15 dollars more than the integrated parts.

Was a Merry Christmas to me present. Got about 800 US in the hole top rack. I thought that was pretty darn reasonable. The CGS01 from Lower west side is my favorite purchased module. Though I could do everything it does with my home built gear, it is so convenient to have it all in one module. (Odd divides, even divides, a quasi ring mod, and a mixer) layd out very nicely, I must add.

Hi Grumble

I think this is what you are looking for.

Am trying water slide decals on my modules. ( really don't want to take my sequencer apart to do a better graphics job)

Water slide decal paper is looking a lot better.

Thanks Grumble

While each rack of my synth is different and complimentary.

My goal was to have each rack also be an independant synth on its own.

I can haul the top keyboard and bottom rack to rehearsals and be able to get buy.

Not that I play out much any more. A guy can still Dream LOL

fuck's sake Chris ! i love those two new synthesizers sitting on top of the pile.

there s something about that raw and unrefined wood cabinet. i like the amateurish look most DIY synths have,as opposed to that of the synths you can buy off the shelf.
never been a fan of that polished, new breed of modern analog synths.

i believe in making cabinets from scratch, although imperfect. they drip character in my view. Cool Cool

I have no skill at synth either Grumble. I'm a guitar player. I mostly use everything through my bass pedals, which I use to fill in a lot.

LOL the mistakes really stand out when you make a mistake on 2 instruments at the same time.

THanks Alanwilder81. I'm going for a little more refined finished product. However I'm not going for factory built look. Things should have a little Character.

LOL speaking of Character, there is an odd tradition amongst a lot of the musicians around here to put the first scratch or dent in any new guitar you buy before you leave the store. Gets it out of the road, so you can focus on playing the thing.

Will never forget the look on a store owners face in a much larger town, when my brother purchased a 1500 dollar guitar, asked to borrow a drum stick, and put the first ding in the back. LOL was priceless!!!

chaps,
i can't play keyboards either, but all in all, who give's a crap ? Laughing Laughing Laughing

i love synthesizers from a technician-engineer standpoint. Or sound designer if you will. You press one key and you have a sound. You tweak it, you mould it, you hammer it. that's what synths are made for, ultimately. Exploring sound and creating atmospheres.
it's not all about performing Smile the wankfest showoffs of those musicians playing hundred notes in a bar never appealed to me.

and lets not forget that a synth is the very punk instrument, as mr Daniel Miller, former Depeche Mode producer often claims. In that it's the DIY attitude that plays a major role in electronic music production
it doesnt take skills to play a synthesizers

i got asked the same question very frequently, or worse yet, when friends tell
" c'mon man,lemme hear you play " Cool Cool
" i cant play a keyboard" is my obvious answer to them. They look at me in disbelieve.

People don't know what sequencers are. They can hardly tell apart a piano from a frigging church organ, let alone knowing sequencers.

i sometimes feel to be part of one of the most obscure musical crews out there, to the average person.Never mind Wink
