Hi there everyone. I have recently made a track and i had it mastered in a pro-studio that deals with EDM.
https://soundcloud.com/jonnywooduk/shindaman-rain-dance-original-mix
A contact of mine, Techno DJ & Part time producer asked me for a copy of the track to listen to and TOTALLY Slated the mastering to the point he didnt even believe that i had it mastered. Said it had no drive or punch.
Now the guy who mastered the track was from the school of dont put too much drive on the master especially if it is going to be played live or on radio, leave that to the DJ's taste, keep it at 0db and if the listener wants more drive then they can do that with their mixer and allow them to adapt the track the way they see fit.
Apart from that my contact said it was an OK track.
This is my FIRST ever EDM track and i was pretty proud of it TBH. I now its not chart material, but feel like just deleting it now. Would love some more creative feedback on this track. Who is right? Did i do the right thing by allowing movement in the drive or should i have just given it more Oomph in the studio so DJs could keep their mixers at 12 o clock?
Cheers in advance . |

I think they are both right, but about different parts of the piece. Try asking what they each think about the structure and development and if they would make suggestions about that. But I should warn you, I don't know that genre; I only know what my ears hear, and in different parts to me it sounds like they are both right. Just my opinion, 'cause you seem to really want opinions to help you sort it out. |

Sounds like a live and learn experience. I kinda feel like the not putting any drive on anything is a bad move, regardless of who's playing it. There has to be something standing further than the rest catching the ear naturally, whether or not a dj decides to blend it more or pop it harder shouldn't really matter. I'm pretty new still and this is all based on what I've read and experienced personally. Don't delete it, make tons of new stuff and listen to it later on with a chuckle and smile! |
