Satellite 5 mini-forum Subject description: contributors and listeners schmooze page |
|
|
In case you stumbled onto this post accidentally, this is the official mini-forum for contributors and listeners to the streaming-on-demand music show Satellite 5. (Learn more at http://sat-5.com)
To those of you who came here deliberately... HOWDY!!!
I'm your old pal TATE (aka AEJOTZ) welcoming you to the coolest e-m site on the internet, electro-music.com. You've heard me talk about this community on the show. Satellite 5 has played music by a number of musicians I've "met" here and several sat-5 contributors have since become members here.
Be sure to check out the FIVE 24/7 music streams at http://electro-music.com/radio/. Note that stream one features regularly scheduled shows and special events while streams two through five are specialty streams.
If you upload music to the "Online Music" section of the forum, chances are good that your music will be played on one or more of the streams. You can also host your own show or special event here. The admin and "old-timers" will be glad to help you. I'd help you but I'm too lazy.
Anyway, feel free to wander around poking your noses into all the dark forbidden nooks and crannies of electro-music.com. You'll meet some super cool artists, tech super-geeks and the most supportive e-m community in the galaxy.
Now let's talk some Satellite 5 crap. Who's first? _________________ AEJOTZ is pronounced "A-Jotz"

Old Stuff from Old Guys |
|
|
Online music doesn't usually get tagged with the composer's age, but I get the feeling, from hints here and there, that at least some of the music I've found here and at http://www.sat-5.com/ is/was created by folks with not a few decades under their belt. I think it's great. Ya ain't done till the power goes off.
I was listening to Radio1 yesterday (my first chance since finding my way into this community), and enjoying what I was hearing. Then I heard a piece and thought, I've heard this before. I checked the playlist and there was AEJOTZ. I'd heard that track, and another later, on sat-5. When you experience the same thing coming from two different directions you have the feeling you are in a community, no matter how small.
By the way, TATE, you already have access to all my old work that I feel secure enough to expose to the world. Keep up the good work. _________________ Keith Quillen

Oops! Thanks Airlock. I fixed it.
And Keith gets the imaginary award for being the first sat-5 visitor here.
You're right about there being some old timers here. Some of them are even older than ME, if you can imagine such a thing. _________________ AEJOTZ is pronounced "A-Jotz"

Awdio oddity |
|
|
When ScrubRadio.com went kablooey I experimented with other webcast venues for Satellite 5.
Mixlr and Awdio are two sites that have worked well. I still broadcast, record and archive the shows with mixlr. And once in awhile I re-broadcast the shows on Awdio.
Depending on the time of day and day of the week, the number of listeners to Awdio re-broadcasts has ranged from 0 to about 20.
Lately I've been receiving weekly email notices from Awdio stating that people are listening to the archives of the show on that site and "favoriting" the show. I shrugged it off.
This morning I re-broadcast last week's show on Awdio and before it was over the listener count hit 117. Huh??? More on this equally encouraging and confusing development later.
(Awdio is from Europe and has a big Euro audience. I re-broadcast the show at 8:50 AM CST which is 14:50 GMT/UTC)
UPDATE 3-5-17
Awdio recently updated their site and I'm still figuring it out. Listener counts keep piling up even when people listen to archived shows. For example, a show I re-broadcast on Awdio one month ago is up to 465 listens. Woohoo!
UPDATE 3-18-17
I don't understand what's going on with the Awdio re-broadcast. Now the numbers are topping 200 listeners per episode and Satellite 5 is being listed with "featured channels" on the homepage. I haven't upgraded membership or paid for anything. Could it really be that the show is just spontaneously growing in popularity? _________________ AEJOTZ is pronounced "A-Jotz"

BEST SHOW EVER |
|
|
Just finished and re-listened to this week's show featuring JP Snell + Zawntrex and all I can say is WOW! I'd wanted to feature JP for some time, but I also wanted to do a show highly representative of the kind of music I want for the show. Somehow, both of those things came solidly together today. I wasn't haphazard about tune selection and sequence, but I really didn't expect it to all work together so well. It almost sounds like I know what I'm doing, and that's certainly not the case!
Anyway, if you miss this episode of Satellite 5 you're a big poophead. _________________ AEJOTZ is pronounced "A-Jotz"

Real live terrestrial radio!! |
|
|
So, you've heard your music played on the internet but you still wish your music could be transmitted, at least once, on good old terrestrial radio? Is that why the frowny face, bucko?
Well, frown no more! Go to http://electro-music.com/forum/viewtopic.php?highlight=bill+fox+submissions&t=9502 and learn how to submit your weird music to DJ Bill Fox for consideration for airplay... on real air!
When Bill played one of my tunes on FM radio I had the giggles for a week! _________________ AEJOTZ is pronounced "A-Jotz"

VOX-1 on Satellite 5 Subject description: genre-defying synthetic music... with vocals??? |
|
|
The next show will be very different.
I began trying to select tunes about midweek, but I was tired and in a weird mood and nothing was moving me. The first tune that sounded good to me was a recent submission with lyrics. The next one that appealed to me also had lyrics. The little light went on in my empty head and I began searching for more tunes with some kind of vocals. When I was finished I had enough great tunes, with "some kind of" vocals for a whole show.
The material ranges from outright "songs" to "experimental music" implementing vocals in some way or other. I'm pretty excited about it.
I'm calling the show VOX-1 because I'm sure I'll do this again someday. _________________ AEJOTZ is pronounced "A-Jotz"

The show and I will be out of commission for at least a month.
I just started chemo for leukemia. Prognosis is very hopeful and resulting lifestyle changes might mean even more time to devote to shows once I return.
I won't be checking email during my hospital stay.
Love and gratitude to our "family"

I even took took out high dollar cancer insurance last year intending to use some of the money for some kind of "fun" in case I got the bad news. I'm thinking maybe a Moog like the one JP Snell plays in his video. I'll be asking everyone for recommendations once I return.

Thanks so much, guys!
Finished chemo, marrow has "rebooted" and I'm home again.
Tomorrow (5-10-17) I get a marrow biopsy. If no weird cells are present we move on to marrow transplant or stem cell therapy. _________________ AEJOTZ is pronounced "A-Jotz"

Had to do follow-up "consolidation" chemo for ten days.
Now I'm feeling pretty good and I'm actually producing my own blood again.
This morning did ANOTHER (blech) marrow biopsy. Results Friday.
Next step, heavy chemo and stem cells; and hospital for a month!!!
But on the brighter side, last Sunday I rode my motorcycle for the first time since March.
Also, I've been playing my Casio MT-68 and I just ordered a Yamaha PSS-470. I love those old "toy" keyboards; the good ones, anyway. And the MT-65/68* and the PSS-460/470** are among the best.
I guess you could say I'm still kicking.

Thanks so much rh2y and my other dear e-m friends!
Feeling very well lately. Riding motorcycle and playing synths daily. That's the good news. The ambiguous news is I start my hospital stay on August 4.
I'm armed and ready with a new Yamaha Reface DX to play with and three books about motorcycle trips around the world, one right before WWI, one between the wars and one in the '70s. It will be interesting to read how motorcycles and the world changed from era to era.
I think I'll take my BR-600 recorder to the hospital, too, in case I need to multi-track a new tune and upload it to electro-music.com. There's no way to know in advance if I'll feel up to it. "Better to have and not need than to need and not have." _________________ AEJOTZ is pronounced "A-Jotz"

UPDATE August 14, 2017
I received stem cells three days ago. So far I haven't grown tentacles or anything. I feel pretty good except right after getting drugs, which happens several times a day. I get very chatty when a pretty female doctor or nurse is in the room so I know I'm not dead yet.
I'll have to stay in the hospital at least a couple more weeks and that's the hard part. My wife visits almost daily but I miss my cats. I miss Henry the cat so much it hurts.
I brought my new Yamaha Reface DX with me so I'm not synth-less. The DX has the best mini-keys ever plus a quantizing sequencer so it will bump the MicroSampler off my keyboard stand when I get home.
The MS will go in my Gator bag for portable use as my "sitting outside the coffeehouse sipping a latte and noodling" instrument. Being lightweight with a smoothly rounded case and recessed controls, it's the perfect gig-bag or backpack board. I won't snap anything off putting it in and out of the bag. It holds up to 288 sounds so I can always find an interesting sound to noodle with. Which reminds me, I bought a bunch of Mellotron samples that I haven't loaded into it, yet. The MS has an auto-loop feature, so I wouldn't have to play sustained Mellotron parts "spider" style.
Nap time. Later homies. _________________ AEJOTZ is pronounced "A-Jotz"

AEJOTZ has passed |
|
|
It is with a heavy heart that I report the news Howard Tate (Aejotz) has passed away.
I had emailed him yesterday to see how he was doing, and his wife replied that he had passed on Friday.
Mary asked that I let you all know: "That would be great if you could notify others thru the website. He enjoyed his music and doing shows so much. Leukemia returned last month and an infection overtook his lungs."
