Hi guys.

The Raspberry Pi sounds good too. Wink

YERZMYEY - RPi ZWEI

01 RPi Zwei
02 Ursula (part 2)
03 Alien encounter
04 Wake Hime
05 Digital Garbage RPi's Remix

TT: 19:15 min.

This album has been made on Raspberry Pi 2.
Also, it has been recorded entirely & directly from the machine.

The RPi's sound is being generated by the Broadcom BCM2835 chip (for the 1st model of RPi) and by Broadcom BCM2836 chip (in the 2nd model RPi), so it's resolved somewhat like in ZX Spectrum: the sound is being generated by CPU.

They say it works with 11 bit quality. It's not an actual DAC, it is a digital PWM module (gives a 'pulse width modulated' signal) working with frequency around 40MHz and it is low-pass-filtered.
The original Pi sound is warm'n'soft; doesn't remind thousands of razors.

Some people claim RPi isn't good for music.
They are WRONG.

Nice!

I've also worked with RPi technology, I have a few RPi-3, three of them have the Element14-Cirrus audio board which sounds very nice (24 bit stereo up to 192kHz sample rate). I've been able to get as many as 64 voices of polyphony (using ALSA) for several synths with unoptimized C code. I'm currently working on fixing optimization and getting cross core audio communication working properly so that I can have some fairly advanced special effects.

My development environment is just Raspbian, but I do eliminate any service programs I don't need to preserve CPU for the synth.

Sounds most interesting and I would love to hear some outcome, when it's possible.

> I have a few RPi-3
---------------
Yes, now I moved to "3" and possibly will stay on it.
That is, if the noise from cooler will not be too big (well, the board is tiny, let's admit - everything is close each-other).

> three of them have the Element14-Cirrus audio board which sounds very nice

I was actually thinking of exactly the same thing; finally decided to stay with the stock machine this time, to keep it 'minimum' and check out what will come out.

> My development environment is just Raspbian
-----------------
Same here, although I imagine that samples don't take that much of CPU power as soft-synths do.
Max. I used 26 channels at once but I'm pretty sure it could do more (if it would be needed).

All the best!!
Y

Wow - a cooler. I run my Pi3 boards at 1200 MHz constant. I use nothing more than the stick-on heat sinks - and I live in "the desert" of Los Angeles where the temperature can be over 90F (32.22C) which is when I switch on AC. The boards do not have enclosures mainly because they don't fit when the Cirrus board is attached.

I monitor the CPU temperature which usually runs around 50C to 60C with ambient air temperatures close to 21C. This is the case when running one of my synths which I run with 3 isolated cores that burn at 100% when the synth is running. I've never seen it go over 70C (where 85C is absolute maximum).

One of the Pi3 boards is a server (file, web, NTP, NFS, mail, bind, etc.) that runs 24x7 and literally never crashes. Another is a sort of low end workstation that also runs 24x7 and has never crashed. One of the reasons I did this was specifically because of the fan noise of the old server (an Intel P4 HT machine). The Pi3 server actually performs about as well as the old Intel machine.

These machines have been running like this continuously for about 2 years. I never overclock beyond the 1200 MHz limit set by the RPi people.

Have you tried to run it without the cooler?

Hi,

well - so it would seem like I will try.

Especially that it is possible I would have to use the Pi while some concerts.
I used it once before but it was the Pi2 and then I lost my SD card somehow so it's easier to use the Pi3 ready to work than to restore the Pi2.

OK, I will check it out then!

All the best,
Y
