In the simulation I added two 10K pull-down resistors in the input that you won't need if you feed it logic signals. The 100K resistor and the two diodes are for the wired-OR gate.

It occurs to me that you could probably also do the circuit as I have drawn it below. The feedback resister needs to be a little larger that the input resistors to ensure the 40106 flicks over. The A & B inputs need to run straight back to a gate with no intervening resistors otherwise the voltage balance will get messed up.

would a single non-inverting buffer do the same? (4050)

Possibly, but it is a lot easier with a schmitt trigger which the 4050 isn't. You'll need the feedback resistor to be just a little more than half the value of each input resistor. But to tell the truth I've never abused non-schmitt trigger gates like that so I can't be sure it will work. If there is any noise you could get a false transition.
If that sounds odd it is because the behaviour of a normal gate isn't defined near half voltage. It might switch it might not depending on the exact design or even the batch. A schmitt trigger chip is required to have defined behavior for slow transitions.

If you need a bunch of these gates it is worth breadboarding a 4050 and seeing if it works.

Somewhere on this forum there is a post (which I am probably unable to find now) using a similar
technique for gates. So thanks for reminding me, as it is something I always forget about.

A 4050 or any noninverting gate with a feed forward resistor IS a Schmitt-Trigger. I'm sure it will be fine too with proper dimensioned Rs
