hello, i am facing a strange issue. i have a cd4040 with a stable clock and a led to test the outputs. every output besides q1 makes the led blink according to the division. but q1 only creates a weak glow. this is happening for different 4040 chips, so i cannot believe they are all broken.

any ideas what can cause this?

cheers,
ello

Do you have the reset input (pin 11) connected to ground ?

I had the same issue with a 74 HCT 4040. Q2, Q3, Q4 and so on were working but Q1 not. I think the HCT ic is the problem, it does not even have buffered outputs Evil or Very Mad I will buy some CD 4040 and try it again. Did you use HCT or CD ics?

i am using the cd4040be. and was definately the breadboard. i guess the pins are not 100% isolated to each other.
