Subject description: Where to find good solder

I've been plagued with bad solder.

Just ordered a little T12 clone station, works lovely, cheap too, but the solder I got is bleh! Reviews are sometimes miss leading. I guess I fell for the oldest trick in the book.

Any solder recommendations? It's depressing soldering and seeing your solder go from shiny with heat, to dull turd color when the joint is finished.

I use cheap 60/40 solder from the local electronics shop.

This is what I got, standard 60/40. It works, but 50% of my joints aren't shiny. There solid joints, but my OCD is kicking in. I like seeing the shine Mad

As a brand, I've generally had good luck with Kester.
I would also recommend a Flux Pen, or small bottle of liquid flux to help with wetting the joint. Dab a little flux on the joint before soldering. The flux will flow sooner than solder and will help the solder to flow. Make sure you only apply heat long enough for the solder to flow and remove the solder strip and iron tip as quickly as possible. Too much dwell time on a joint can cause the tin ratio to change and result in what you are describing. Also be careful not to overload the joint.

Don't bother going cheap on the solder itself. Good materials + good technique will produce repeatable good results (with adequate practice).

I can't give you any advice on where to get it but I use Stannol HF32 (Sn60Pb39Cu1) solder myself.
